Ford Australia’s new Ford Pro Converter Program is launching with a clear goal: to simplify the way fleet customers buy and equip their service vehicles. As one of the first approved partners, XL Service Bodies is working closely with Ford to deliver integrated solutions — starting with new builds for the Ford Ranger Super Duty.
At the Super Duty launch, Ford engineers explained the intent behind the program:
“The idea is… we’re partnering with trusted partners in the conversion space, who work with our fleet customers in particular right now, so service bodies in particular. And what we’re trying to do is an end-to-end solution,” one Ford engineer said. “Rather than just the customer buys the car and then has to go to their own upfitter… we’re working with those converters and making sure that the conversions integrate seamlessly with the vehicle. All the features work, all of the driver assist technologies work.”
The goal is to give fleet customers a turnkey solution that functions as an OEM product, even though it combines an original Ford vehicle with an upfitter-built component.
XL Service Bodies: An Experienced Partner
For XL Service Bodies, the partnership builds on years of collaboration with Ford through the Ford QVM (Qualified Vehicle Modifier) program.
In an exclusive interview with Fleet News Group, JP Shelburn, Managing Director of XL Service Bodies, said:
“We were first to be on the Ford proving ground as a service body manufacturer… They really wanted to put our bodies through the test and see how the implications had on the chassis.” “They saw how we actually engineered our matching system, and they really were interested in the science behind its effect on the chassis.”
Shelburn also confirmed that XL has already migrated to the Ford Pro Converter Program and is working closely with Ford on Super Duty builds.
“The Ford Pro Converter Program is officially being launched… We’ve migrated into that.”
Engineering for Durability
At the Super Duty launch, Ford engineers highlighted the extensive re-engineering of the new vehicle platform to ensure reliability and capability for fleet use:
“When I’m talking powertrain, suspension, frame — 70% of the content of that underbody is all new from Ranger. So it’s all beefed up, bigger, badder, plus all the protective, like I spoke about the bash plates again, straight out of the factory,” one engineer explained. “We know how our customers use these trucks — they’re brutal — and we’ve tested them in those conditions.”
For XL, rigorous engineering and testing is a core part of their service body development. In his earlier comments, JP Shelburn noted that XL uses finite element analysis (FEA) and an accelerated vibration testing rig to ensure bodies will stand up to the harsh conditions faced by Australian fleet vehicles.
Designed for Fleet Needs
The Ford Pro Converter Program is driven by direct feedback from fleet customers, who want an easier path to fully integrated service vehicles.
“This is a core insight,” a Ford engineer said. “This goes… all the way to the original Ranger introduction and seeing what customers were taking the truck that they would buy from us or from other manufacturers, send it to an upfitter, tear the truck apart… We designed this vehicle to actually go do the work.” “What we’re doing with Super Duty is basically we’re giving them the platform to then use these converters to actually work on the customization part of the truck, and the chassis stays basically intact.”
For XL Service Bodies, this OEM-level approach aligns with their engineering standards and deep understanding of fleet requirements.
JP Shelburn described the XL philosophy this way:
“It’s about lower centre of gravity, getting your actual masses right, really putting the science to it.” “We did our first payload calculator on our website over 12 years ago… we put it out openly to share for risk assessments and knowledge.”
The new Ford Pro Converter Program represents an important step forward for Australian fleets, delivering more integrated and reliable service vehicle solutions.
As Ford engineers put it:
“The customer gets a turnkey solution that is like an OEM type product.”
And with trusted partners like XL Service Bodies involved from day one, the collaboration is already helping to deliver precisely the type of fit-for-purpose vehicles that modern fleets demand.
