Vehicles may change, contracts eventually come up for renewal and fleet strategies continue to evolve, but strong supplier relationships are often built over many years.
For Toyota Fleet Management (TFM), supporting customers after the initial vehicle transaction or contract is a central part of its approach to fleet management.
It is also an important part of TFM’s case for recognition as Fleet Supplier of the Year in the 2026 Fleet News Group Awards.
Fiona Deal, Head of Fleet Sales Enablement at Toyota Fleet Management, said fleet customers are increasingly looking for suppliers that remain involved and accessible over the life of the relationship.
“Our approach is centred on long-term relationships, rather than one-off transactions,” Deal said.
TFM supports customers through dedicated relationship management teams, with the aim of maintaining an ongoing understanding of each organisation and how its requirements are changing.
“Every customer is supported by dedicated relationship management teams who conduct regular reviews, monitor fleet performance and work proactively with customers to identify opportunities for improvement.”
That ongoing involvement is particularly important because fleet requirements rarely remain static.
Organisations grow, operational requirements change, new technologies become available and expectations around sustainability, safety, efficiency and mobility continue to evolve.
A fleet supplier therefore needs to understand not only where a customer is today, but also where the organisation is heading.
“We aim to understand how their business is evolving so we can provide ongoing support throughout the life of the relationship,” Deal said.
For Deal, the qualities fleet customers value most in their suppliers have remained relatively consistent despite the pace of change occurring across the automotive and fleet sectors.
“Fleet customers value trust, expertise, responsiveness and a genuine understanding of their business.”
Those expectations increasingly place suppliers in the role of adviser as well as service provider.
Customers want solutions, but they also want people who can help them interpret changes in technology, operating conditions and fleet management practices.
Deal said customers are looking for partners capable of helping them deal with that complexity.
“They want a partner who can help them navigate change, reduce complexity and provide practical advice that delivers tangible outcomes.”
Maintaining that relevance also requires suppliers themselves to evolve.
TFM says it is continuing to invest across technology, data, mobility and sustainability as customer expectations change.
“TFM continues to evolve by investing in technology, data insights, mobility solutions, sustainability capability and customer-focused service models, ensuring we remain relevant as customer needs and market conditions change,” Deal said.
These are some of the qualities being recognised through the Fleet News Group Fleet Supplier of the Year Award: expertise, service, accessibility and the ability to support fleet professionals over the long term.
Toyota Fleet Management is one of the finalists in 2026.
