The Lake Macquarie Police District has welcomed a new recruit — but this one has four wheels and a cheerful grin. Meet Sergeant Jim, a specially outfitted Suzuki Jimny that’s set to become the face of community engagement in one of New South Wales’ largest regional cities.
Proudly provided by Suzuki Australia at no cost to the community, Sergeant Jim will serve as a key asset to the Crime Prevention Unit, helping officers foster relationships with residents across 648 square kilometres of the Lake Macquarie Police District. With over 221,000 residents and significant growth forecast through to 2036, the region is putting strong focus on public safety and positive police visibility.
Driving Community Connection
Described as “more than just a vehicle” by Suzuki Australia General Manager Michael Pachota, Sergeant Jim has been purposefully selected for its friendly appeal and capability. The Suzuki Jimny has a strong following among Aussies of all ages and is known for being approachable, reliable and, quite simply, a bit of fun.
That’s exactly the point.
“In times when national crime rates are a topic of discussion, we saw an opportunity to contribute positively at a local level,” said Pachota. “Sergeant Jim is a conversation starter — a way for officers to engage the public in a positive way.”
With its eye-catching police livery and compact, capable design, the Jimny is expected to turn heads and open doors to meaningful conversations at local schools, community centres and events.
A Visible Sign of Local Support
The initiative represents a genuine partnership between police and the private sector. Lake Macquarie Police District Commander, Superintendent Tracy Chapman APM, said the vehicle would make police more approachable — particularly for younger residents.
“Sergeant Jim’s livery will hopefully be a great conversation starter while on display and get more people, especially younger people, comfortable with approaching their local police,” said Superintendent Chapman. “The purchase of this vehicle comes at no cost to the community thanks to the generosity of Suzuki Australia in providing this vehicle for our community engagement activities.”
It’s a clever way to use the charm of the Jimny to promote important messages around safety, respect and building trust in the community.
More Than a Gimmick
While it might sound light-hearted, the move has real intent. The Crime Prevention Unit works to prevent, disrupt and respond to crime across the region’s 95 communities. As the city grows — with more than 24,000 new residents expected by 2036 — the need for proactive community engagement becomes even more critical.
Suzuki, which has a long history of supporting community events, sees this as a natural extension of their brand values. With Jimny meet-ups across the country drawing crowds of 200-plus vehicles, the model has become a symbol of fun, adventure and inclusivity.
By putting one in police colours and handing over the keys to the Lake Macquarie team, Suzuki Australia is showing that the same values can help build safer, more connected neighbourhoods.
Sergeant Jim might not wear a badge or wield a baton, but its mission is just as important — to connect, build trust and support the local police in keeping Lake Macquarie a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
As this pint-sized patrol car rolls into town events, school visits and community gatherings, it’s not just there for the photo ops — it’s helping to open conversations and build stronger ties between residents and the people who protect them.
