FOTON has officially returned to the Australian market with the all-new Tunland ute, a model that aims squarely at the middle ground between traditional dual-cab utes and full-size pickups.
The Tunland range launches with two variants — the V7 and V9 — both powered by a 2.0-litre Aucan turbo-diesel engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. The combination delivers up to 120 kW and 450 Nm, giving the Tunland the strength to tow 3,500 kg and haul payloads exceeding a tonne depending on model.
FOTON says this mix of efficiency, capability, and comfort is designed for Australian conditions — and it’s hard to argue. The ute has been tuned for local drivers and is offered with two clear personalities: the V7 built for work, and the V9 for lifestyle versatility.
Fleet-ready performance
For fleet operators and tradies, the V7 is the tough workhorse of the family. With over 1,000 kg payload and a focus on durability, it’s equipped with leaf-spring rear suspension, a spray-in tub liner, and the full suite of safety technology — including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM).
The V9 takes things up a notch, using multi-link coil suspension for a smoother ride and refined handling. That makes it ideal for mixed-use fleets or small business owners who need a capable ute during the week and a comfortable tourer on weekends.
Comfort and tech
Inside, the Tunland offers a genuinely modern cabin experience. Every model includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, with wireless Apple CarPlay, physical climate dials, and voice control (“Hi Foton”) for hands-free operation.
The spacious interior benefits from FOTON’s wide-body design, offering excellent leg and shoulder room for all passengers. Noise insulation and refined ride quality bring an SUV-like level of comfort rarely seen in the light commercial class.
Top-spec models introduce features such as facial-recognition driver profiles, heated and ventilated leather seats, and a panoramic sunroof — proof that comfort doesn’t have to come at the expense of capability.
Safety as standard
Across the range, the Tunland carries an impressive array of advanced safety and driver-assistance systems. In addition to AEB, the list includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering, Traffic Sign Recognition, Door-Open Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Trailer Stability Assist.
With eight airbags — including a centre airbag between the front seats — and a high-strength body structure featuring 1500 MPa side beams, the Tunland meets the latest expectations for occupant protection.
Built tough, ready for anything
Beneath its muscular styling is a ladder-frame chassis derived from FOTON’s commercial-vehicle heritage. The dual-wishbone front and rigid-rear suspension setups have been tuned for strength, ride comfort, and stability.
Ground clearance of 240 mm, a 28-degree approach angle, 26-degree departure angle, and 700 mm wading depth make it more than capable off-road or on a construction site. The load tray is large enough for a standard pallet and designed with integrated tie-downs and assisted tailgate.
The powertrain — developed with Ricardo UK and paired to ZF’s benchmark automatic — combines diesel torque with mild-hybrid efficiency. The 48-volt system provides extra torque at low speeds for towing or take-off, while regenerative braking and start-stop help deliver a 10 per cent efficiency gain over the previous generation.
Warranty and dealer support
All Tunland variants are covered by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and seven-year service-activated roadside assistance, with 15,000 km or 12-month service intervals.
FOTON’s growing dealer network across Australia will support both private and fleet customers, with a focus on long-term reliability and local service capability.
The verdict
For Fleet Managers, the Tunland could be the “just right” solution — capable enough for the worksite, refined enough for the open road, and packed with features normally reserved for passenger SUVs.
As Glen Cooper, FOTON Australia General Manager, summed it up:
“The all-new Tunland is the Goldilocks of utes — not too big, not too small, but just right for Australian drivers. It blends the durability of FOTON’s global truck-building heritage with the refinement, space, and technology today’s customers expect.”
The all-new FOTON Tunland is now available for test drive through FOTON LCV retailers nationwide.
