The BYD SHARK 6 has quickly become one of the most talked-about new utes in Australia — a plug-in hybrid that blends electric efficiency with genuine off-road and towing capability. Now, Australian owners can take that versatility even further, with Ironman 4×4 launching the first certified Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) upgrade for the SHARK 6.
This development is a milestone for the industry: it’s the first time a plug-in hybrid ute has been certified to enter the one-tonne class, bridging the gap between hybrid efficiency and true workhorse practicality.
A game-changer for plug-in hybrids
Under the new program, Ironman 4×4’s certified GVM upgrade increases the BYD SHARK 6’s allowable Gross Vehicle Mass from 3,500kg to 3,850kg, boosting payload capacity from 790kg to 1,140kg — an extra 350kg of carrying capability.
That extra headroom means drivers can now safely carry more gear, fit accessories such as canopies or bull bars, or tow heavier loads — without exceeding legal weight limits.
“With our GVM upgrades, owners can now match electric innovation with genuine one-tonne capability,” said Matt Frost, Chief Operating Officer at Ironman 4×4. “It allows SHARK 6 drivers to enjoy the benefits of plug-in hybrid technology without compromising comfort, safety, or performance.”
Certified and compliant
The Ironman 4×4 upgrade is the first certified GVM solution available for the BYD SHARK 6 and is available exclusively through accredited Ironman 4×4 stores nationwide.
To meet compliance requirements, the program includes both federal (pre-registration) and state-based (post-registration) certification options — meaning it’s available whether the vehicle is new or already registered.
Customers can choose from four suspension kits tailored to their usage:
- Medium Kit: For drivers who carry occasional loads, lifting the GVM to 3,850kg.
- Heavy Kit: For vehicles with constant loads of 300kg or more.
- Extra Heavy Kit: For vehicles carrying 600kg+ over the unladen weight.
- Fleet Spec Kit: Designed for continuous operation under high load, common in commercial or fleet use.
Each system uses Ironman’s IM2.5 Monotube Shock Absorbers, engineered for precision damping, reduced heat fade, and a smoother ride under pressure — even on corrugated roads or uneven job sites.
Technical improvements at a glance
The GVM upgrade includes critical component enhancements to handle the additional load safely:
| Component | Original | Upgraded |
| Front Axle Capacity | 1,610 kg | 1,800 kg |
| Rear Axle Capacity | 1,954 kg | 2,150 kg |
| GVM Rating | 3,500 kg | 3,850 kg |
| Payload | 790 kg | 1,140 kg |
Combined, these upgrades officially move the BYD SHARK 6 into the one-tonne ute class, opening new opportunities for both private and fleet buyers.
Designed for Australia
The Ironman 4×4 engineering team developed the GVM program specifically for Australian conditions, drawing on decades of experience in off-road suspension and load management.
The upgrade was validated through extensive simulation and physical testing to ensure it met — and in some cases exceeded — OEM durability standards.
According to Mark Berger, General Manager at Ironman 4×4, the GVM upgrade was a natural next step following the company’s successful collaboration with BYD during the SHARK 6 launch.
“There was a clear need for a certified load upgrade,” Berger explained. “Customers love the SHARK’s electric drive, but when you start adding accessories and towing, you quickly reach the standard payload limit. This upgrade ensures drivers can safely use the vehicle to its full potential — whether that’s towing, touring, or commercial use.”
A boost for fleet buyers
The GVM upgrade also opens doors for fleet applications, providing a compliant pathway for commercial operators looking to introduce low-emission utes into their operations without compromising on capacity.
Berger said the upgrade could be particularly valuable for councils, utilities, and contractors that need dual-purpose vehicles — capable of zero-emission urban trips during the week and regional towing duties on weekends.
“Fleet companies want to trial plug-in hybrids, but they also need vehicles that can do a full day’s work,” he said. “The Ironman 4×4 GVM upgrade provides that flexibility.”
Available now
The upgrade kits are available through Ironman 4×4’s national network, priced from $4,190 fitted. All installation work must be performed by an accredited Ironman 4×4 fitment centre to maintain certification.
With over 12,000 BYD SHARK 6s now on Australian roads, this new upgrade is set to be a popular addition — delivering the load-carrying confidence and practicality that many buyers have been waiting for.
