Griffith University’s Cameron Geraghty is heading back to the (virtual) classroom after being awarded the Smartrak IPWEA Fleet Management Scholarship for Semester 2, 2025.
As the Traffic Operations Supervisor at one of Queensland’s largest universities, Geraghty already wears several hats—fleet operations, compliance audits, project coordination—but he’s ready to add a new one: certified fleet manager.
The scholarship gives him free enrolment in the 12-week IPWEA Fleet Management Certificate, a course that’s become the go-to program for fleet practitioners who want to take the next step in their careers.
“I’m looking to build on my practical experience by gaining a formal qualification,” said Geraghty.
“The course will deepen my understanding of strategic fleet management and help me deliver better outcomes for the university—especially around lifecycle costing, procurement, and sustainability.”
Geraghty joins a growing list of professionals using the IPWEA course to bridge the gap between operations and strategy—something that’s become critical as organisations ask their fleet teams to do more with less while supporting net zero goals.
“It’s about more than just ticking boxes,” Geraghty said.
“I want to apply best-practice frameworks that support service delivery, reduce costs, and align with Griffith’s environmental objectives.”
Why He Was Chosen
The judging panel described Geraghty’s application as “well considered” with “great strategic thinking.” They were particularly impressed with his ability to connect the course content to real-world challenges in his organisation.
“Cameron clearly understands how this qualification will help him improve the performance of his fleet and make a broader impact on his organisation and its community,” one judge commented.
The panel also highlighted his focus on sustainability, leadership, and his long-term vision to become a more influential voice within the university’s transport and logistics operations.
Investing in the Future of Fleet
The scholarship is part of a partnership between Smartrak, a leading provider of fleet and mobility management solutions, and IPWEA, the go-to training organisation for fleet professionals in local government and beyond.
Together, they’re helping emerging fleet leaders gain the tools they need to manage increasingly complex asset portfolios—cars, trucks, plant, mowers, EVs—you name it.
“There’s a lot of talent out there in the fleet space that just needs a bit of a boost,” said Marc Sibbald, Director of IPWEA Fleet.
“This scholarship gives people like Cameron the chance to formalise their knowledge and step into more strategic roles.”
A Win for Griffith University (and the Sector)
As public and private sector fleets wrestle with tighter budgets, emission targets, and digital transformation, having someone with the skills to manage vehicles strategically is more important than ever.
For Griffith University, this means a stronger focus on optimising asset replacement, improving compliance, and eventually greening the fleet—all areas Geraghty is keen to tackle with the knowledge gained from the course.
“I want to contribute more effectively to our ongoing improvements,” Geraghty said.
“The financial management part of the course is especially relevant right now as we upgrade systems and look at our operational costs.”
