As the seasons change and wet weather returns to many parts of Australia, we’re reminding Fleet Managers not to overlook one of the most important – and often forgotten – vehicle safety items: wiper blades.
While fleets typically focus on servicing schedules, tyres, brakes and safety inspections, wiper blades can easily be neglected until a driver is caught in heavy rain with poor visibility.
Wiper blades play a critical role in vehicle safety, particularly for fleets operating across diverse weather conditions. Clear visibility is essential for reducing driver fatigue, improving hazard detection and maintaining safe vehicle operation during rain, storms and low-light conditions.
The challenge for many fleets is that wiper blade performance often deteriorates gradually. Drivers may not notice the decline until streaking, smearing or missed sections of the windscreen become obvious during a downpour.
Australia’s harsh operating environment can accelerate this deterioration. Even when it is not raining, fleet vehicles spend long hours exposed to intense UV radiation, extreme temperatures, dust, road grime, pollution and other contaminants. These conditions can cause conventional rubber wiper blades to harden, crack and lose effectiveness well before the next scheduled service.
As a result, fleets should consider including regular wiper blade inspections and replacement intervals within their preventative maintenance programs rather than waiting for driver complaints.
While it can be tempting to choose the lowest-cost replacement option, premium silicone-coated wiper blades may provide better long-term value for many fleets.
Silicone-coated blades are designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions more effectively than standard rubber blades. They typically offer longer service life, maintain wiping performance for extended periods and can leave a water-repellent coating on the windscreen that improves visibility during wet weather.
For fleet operators, the benefits extend beyond the replacement cost of the blade itself. Improved visibility contributes to safer driving conditions, while longer-lasting components can reduce maintenance frequency and vehicle downtime.
This is particularly important for vehicles that spend significant time on the road, including sales fleets, service vehicles, utilities, local government fleets and light commercial vehicles.
As organisations review their maintenance programs ahead of the wetter months, it may be worth asking a simple question: when were the wiper blades last replaced?
A relatively inexpensive maintenance item can have a significant impact on driver safety when conditions deteriorate. By incorporating regular wiper blade inspections and considering higher-quality replacement products, fleet managers can help ensure drivers have the visibility they need when they need it most.
