The finalists in the Fleet News Group Fleet Car of the Year Awards were selected using a process designed to reflect the way professional fleet buyers assess vehicles.
Rather than focusing on performance, styling or purchase price alone, nominated vehicles were assessed using Best Value Analysis, or BVA. This approach considers the combination of factors that determine whether a vehicle is a practical, financially sustainable and fit-for-purpose choice for a fleet.
Three finalists were selected in each award category following the initial assessment. They will now progress to a hands-on evaluation by a judging panel made up of experienced fleet buyers, who will determine the winners.
A different approach to vehicle awards
Most traditional vehicle awards are judged by motoring journalists and place significant emphasis on the driving experience, design, performance and new technology.
These remain important considerations, but fleet buyers must look at vehicles through a different lens.
A vehicle entering a fleet may remain in service for several years, travel substantial distances and be used by multiple employees. The purchasing decision must therefore consider operating costs, safety, sustainability, driver suitability, manufacturer support and the vehicle’s ability to meet the organisation’s operational requirements.
The Fleet Car of the Year Awards were developed to recognise vehicles that perform strongly across this broader range of fleet requirements.
What is Best Value Analysis?
Best Value Analysis is a structured assessment process used to compare competing products against several weighted criteria.
It recognises that the cheapest vehicle is not necessarily the best value and that the vehicle with the most features may not be the best operational choice.
Instead, BVA considers the total value delivered over the life of the vehicle.
This is similar to the approach used by fleet managers when preparing a business case, evaluating a tender or selecting vehicles for an approved fleet list. Each vehicle is assessed against the same framework, allowing strengths and weaknesses to be considered consistently.
The result is a balanced assessment that identifies the vehicle offering the best overall fit for fleet applications, rather than simply rewarding the lowest purchase price or the strongest performance in one area.
The criteria used to select the finalists
The Best Value Analysis considered five major areas.
Whole-of-life cost
Whole-of-life cost considers the broader financial impact of operating a vehicle, rather than only its initial purchase price.
The assessment examined the expected cost of running each vehicle across common fleet replacement periods. This included servicing, maintenance, tyres, brakes and energy use, whether the vehicle was powered by petrol, diesel or electricity.
Vehicles were compared with similar models in their market segment to provide a fair assessment. For example, small vehicles were compared with other small vehicles, while utes and vans were assessed against their relevant peers.
Sustainability and safety
The assessment considered the vehicle’s safety credentials, energy consumption and emissions performance.
This allowed vehicles with strong safety outcomes and lower environmental impacts to be recognised, while ensuring that the evaluation reflected the increasing importance of emissions reduction within fleet procurement.
Manufacturer commitment to fleet
A vehicle can only perform effectively in a fleet when it is supported by the manufacturer and its dealer network.
The assessment therefore considered areas such as dealer coverage, fleet sales support, servicing capability and the manufacturer’s broader commitment to fleet customers.
This recognises that fleet buyers require more than a suitable vehicle. They also need reliable support throughout the vehicle’s operating life.
Car park and driveway appeal
Fleet vehicles must meet operational requirements, but they also need to be accepted by the people who drive them.
The assessment considered factors such as market acceptance, model maturity and visual appeal. A vehicle that employees are comfortable and willing to drive can support driver satisfaction, vehicle care and the successful introduction of a fleet program.
Workplace ergonomics
For many employees, a fleet vehicle is also a workplace.
Ergonomics considers how easily and comfortably drivers can use the vehicle during their normal working day. This includes seating, visibility, storage, access to controls, cabin layout and the overall suitability of the vehicle for extended or repeated use.
This part of the assessment will be examined closely by the judges during the hands-on evaluation.
Ensuring the finalists are relevant to fleets
The initial BVA ranking was also reviewed against the vehicle’s relevance to the fleet market.
Vehicles needed to demonstrate that they were genuinely being considered and purchased by fleet customers. This helped ensure that the finalists were not only strong on paper but also practical and credible choices for Australian fleets.
Market acceptance does not determine the winner, but it provides an important indication that a vehicle can meet real operational, support and procurement requirements.
Fleet buyers will decide the winners
The Best Value Analysis was used to identify the three finalists in each category. The next stage places the vehicles in the hands of the judging panel.
Unlike many other vehicle award programs, the Fleet News Group judges are fleet buyers and fleet management professionals rather than motoring journalists.
They will assess each finalist from the perspective of an organisation purchasing and operating vehicles for work. Their evaluation will consider the driving experience, workplace ergonomics, safety, practicality and overall suitability for fleet use.
The judges’ assessments will complete the Best Value Analysis and determine the winner in each Fleet Car of the Year category.
This combination of structured data analysis and hands-on evaluation is designed to identify vehicles that deliver genuine value to fleets—not simply the best vehicle in isolation, but the vehicle that provides the strongest overall solution for fleet buyers, operators and drivers.
