New South Wales has officially passed 100,000 electric vehicles on the road, a milestone that shows just how quickly EVs are becoming part of everyday life for households across the state. For Fleet Managers, this surge in mainstream adoption is more than a statistic — it’s a significant boost to the staff-engagement side of fleet electrification.
The Minns Government credits a strong mix of incentives and charging investment for the state’s momentum. Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe said the milestone reflects growing public confidence:
“NSW drivers are embracing EVs in record numbers… we’re making it easier than ever for NSW drivers to go electric.”
The Electric Vehicle Council also highlighted the cost benefits now driving behaviour change. CEO Julie Delvecchio noted:
“When you make it easier to own an EV, drivers choose the better option… most EV drivers cut their fuel costs by more than 60%.”
But the most significant shift for fleet teams is happening in the outer suburbs, where the FBT-exempt novated lease has unlocked EV affordability for everyday workers.
NALSPA chief executive Rohan Martin said families across Western Sydney and similar regions are leading the trend:
“The outer suburbs are leading the charge on EV uptake in NSW… everyday workers and families are turning to EVs in growing numbers.”
He said the tax cut is proving essential:
“They wouldn’t have bought an EV without the help of the tax cut… it’s vital if we want more everyday workers to save money and reduce emissions.”
For fleets, this means staff are now more familiar with EVs, already seeing the fuel savings at home, and increasingly open to change at work. Concerns about range, charging and performance are fading as employees gain real-world experience through:
- personal EV ownership
- salary-packaged novated leases
- exposure to public charging infrastructure
- positive household experiences
This reduces one of the biggest friction points in fleet EV transitions — gaining staff buy-in and shifting driver habits.
The NSW milestone confirms that EVs are now a mainstream choice. As more households make the switch, Fleet Managers will find it easier to implement EV-ready policies, update vehicle allocations, and roll out charging infrastructure with a workforce that already understands the benefits.
EV adoption at home makes EV adoption at work far simpler — and NSW hitting 100,000 EVs is clear proof that the transition is accelerating.
