When Essential Energy was announced as a winner at the 2026 Geotab Innovation Awards, it marked more than a trophy moment. It was the first time an Australian fleet had secured global recognition in this category — a milestone not just for the organisation, but for the broader APAC region.
For Geotab’s regional leadership, the moment carried real significance.
“It’s massive and amazing for us as a business,” said Geotab Senior Vice President Sean Killen. “It takes a pretty good project to win. They don’t give these out cheap just to make people happy — you better have done a pretty impressive job.”
Safety as a Strategic Priority
Essential Energy’s recognition was grounded in a disciplined and consistent safety strategy. According to David Brown, Associate Vice President Sales – APAC at Geotab, the fleet has embedded safety at the centre of its operations.
“They’ve really put safety as top priority in what they do,” Brown said. “They use the solution very well.”
Brown described the award as a breakthrough moment for the region. “It’s first time we’ve ever won safety or an innovation award for APAC as a whole. So it’s the first of many. But yeah, super proud.”
That pride was echoed across the APAC leadership team. Killen noted the scale of Connect 2026 and the growing presence of the region on the global stage. “We’re making up about 20% of the attendees right now,” he said. “That’s pretty cool. I’m proud of that.”
Platform, Partner and Fleet Alignment
Recognition at a global awards program doesn’t happen in isolation. It reflects alignment between the fleet, the platform and the reseller network supporting implementation.
Will Batty, Associate Vice President Business Development – APAC at Geotab, described the Essential Energy result as a validation of that ecosystem approach.
“It’s a very proud moment for the Australian team to have someone not just be nominated, but to win the award as well,” Batty said. “The Essential Energy team have done a fantastic job of how they’ve used the platform and technology as a whole — really embraced the way that data can be used in a number of different ways, across the safety side of things.”
Batty also highlighted the role of change management. “They’re very focused on that change management and getting drivers on board. I think it’s a great example of how the platform, the reseller and the customer can really drive these outcomes and then be rewarded on the main stage of Connect globally.”
A Signal of Fleet Maturity
The win also reflects a broader shift in the Australian fleet market. Across the Connect sessions, a consistent theme emerged: fleets are moving beyond basic telematics tracking into more advanced use of data, video and predictive analytics.
Brown noted that customers increasingly want answers, not just dashboards. “They can put a specific question into the tool and within seconds get the report with the details on there and what you’re actually looking for,” he said. “You don’t have to be an expert in it to be able to get that.”
That shift toward faster insight and better decision-making underpins safety transformation programs like Essential Energy’s.
For Killen, the award is also symbolic of a maturing APAC market. “It takes a pretty good project to win,” he repeated. “They’ve done a pretty impressive deal.”
More Than a Trophy
Global recognition at Connect 2026 reinforces that Australian fleets are not simply adopting technology — they are shaping best practice.
For Geotab’s APAC leadership, Essential Energy’s win is both validation and momentum.
As Brown put it: “It’s the first of many.”
And if the growth trajectory of the region continues — particularly in heavy transport, utilities and government — it may not be long before more Australian fleets find themselves on the global stage.
