Electric vehicles aren’t maintenance-free — but Ford’s latest service-pricing details prove they’re much cheaper to keep on the road.
With the launch of the E-Transit Custom and Transit Custom PHEV, Ford has revealed full five-year service costs that show how electrification is reshaping whole-of-life fleet budgets.
Service intervals that suit fleet schedules
All Transit Custom variants share the same generous 12-month / 30,000-kilometre service interval — one of the longest in the light-commercial segment. But the difference lies in what those services cost, and how much work needs to be done.
| Model | 12 mth / 30,000 km | 24 mth / 60,000 km | 36 mth / 90,000 km | 48 mth / 120,000 km | 60 mth / 150,000 km | Total (5 years) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-Transit Custom (BEV) | $200 | $300 | $200 | $300 | $200 | $1,200 |
| Transit Custom PHEV | $499 | $499 | $499 | $499 | $475 | $2,471 |
| Transit Custom Trail (Diesel) | $499 | $499 | $499 | $499 | $535 | $2,531 |
The five-year cost for the E-Transit Custom totals just $1,200 — less than half the total service spend of either the PHEV or diesel versions.
Why the BEV costs less
The E-Transit Custom doesn’t need engine oil, filters, spark plugs, exhaust components, or transmission servicing. Its maintenance revolves around fluid checks, tyre rotation, brake inspections, and software updates — simple, predictable, and inexpensive.
By comparison, the Transit Custom PHEV still runs a 2.5-litre petrol engine alongside its electric motor, so traditional servicing still applies. At $2,471 over five years, it’s around $1,270 more than the BEV, despite identical 30,000-kilometre intervals.
The Trail AWD diesel sits at the top of the cost curve, reflecting the complexity of emissions-control hardware and the need for AdBlue® refills.
Warranty and network coverage
All Transit Custom models come with Ford Australia’s five-year / unlimited-kilometre warranty, while the 11.8-kWh (PHEV) and 64-kWh (BEV) batteries are backed by an eight-year / 160,000-kilometre warranty.
Ford also confirmed it will have over 150 dedicated “EV Dealers” by year-end, within its national network of 180+ service centres — ensuring both BEV and PHEV customers can access specialist support across Australia.
Fleet running-cost advantage
When Fleet Managers run the numbers, the savings compound quickly. Over a typical 150,000-kilometre fleet cycle:
- E-Transit Custom: $1,200 servicing cost = $80 per 10,000 km
- Transit Custom PHEV: $2,471 servicing cost = $164 per 10,000 km
- Diesel Trail: $2,531 servicing cost = $168 per 10,000 km
Combine that with lower electricity pricing and regenerative braking benefits, and the E-Transit Custom clearly delivers the lowest total operating cost of the range.
The takeaway for fleets
Electrification isn’t just about emissions; it’s about efficiency. The numbers from Ford’s own service plan show the E-Transit Custom will save fleets over 50 per cent on scheduled servicing alone — before even counting fuel savings.
So while there’s still a cost to maintaining electric vehicles, the maths is simple: the E-Transit Custom is cheaper to service, cheaper to run, and built for the long game in fleet operations.
