The 2026 Fleet News Group Awards are shaping up to be very different from traditional industry awards programs, with judges focused on measurable outcomes, operational improvements, and practical leadership rather than polished submissions and marketing language.
As nominations continue ahead of the 30 June deadline, Fleet News Group has outlined the type of information judges will be looking for when reviewing entries across the major award categories.
The message to fleet operators and suppliers is clear — don’t assume you need a massive fleet, a large budget, or a professionally written submission to become a finalist.
The judging process has been designed to identify organisations that are making genuine improvements in fleet management, safety, sustainability, and technology.
Outcomes Matter More Than Intentions
One of the strongest themes across all award categories is evidence. Judges want to see what challenge an organisation faced, what actions were implemented, and what outcomes were achieved.
That could include lower incident rates, reduced operating costs, improved utilisation, emissions reductions, stronger driver engagement, or better customer service outcomes.
The awards are designed to reward organisations that can demonstrate progress and continuous improvement, even if they are still early in their journey.
Fleet of the Year
For the Fleet of the Year category, judges will assess how well fleet management is integrated into broader business operations.
This includes governance, utilisation, procurement, maintenance, safety, financial management, sustainability, and stakeholder communication.
The category is expected to attract nominations from both public and private sector fleets, with judges looking for organisations that demonstrate mature fleet management practices and strategic thinking.
Importantly, fleet size is not expected to influence judging outcomes. Smaller fleets with strong systems and leadership may perform just as strongly as larger organisations.
Safe Fleet of the Year
The Safe Fleet of the Year category will focus heavily on culture and systems.
Judges are looking for organisations that go beyond vehicle selection and create a genuine safety framework around fleet operations.
Strong submissions are expected to include incident reporting processes, executive involvement, driver education programs, risk monitoring, and evidence of continuous improvement.
Organisations that can demonstrate reductions in incidents or improvements in driver behaviour will stand out strongly.
Fleet Sustainability Award
The Fleet Sustainability Award is expected to attract significant attention as more organisations work through emissions reduction strategies and EV transition plans.
However, the judges are not simply looking for organisations that purchased electric vehicles.
Instead, the category is focused on organisations that take a broader strategic approach to reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency.
This may include reducing fleet size, improving utilisation, reducing unnecessary travel, implementing route optimisation, introducing lower-emission vehicles, or changing driver behaviour.
The key requirement is evidence of planning, implementation, and measurable outcomes.
Fleet Technology Award
Technology is now playing a bigger role in fleet management than ever before, but the judges will be looking beyond the sales pitch.
For the Fleet Technology Award, organisations will need to demonstrate how technology delivered measurable operational benefits.
That could include telematics systems improving utilisation, AI tools reducing administration, maintenance platforms lowering downtime, or safety technology reducing incidents.
The technology must also have been operational long enough to show real-world results.
Judges are expected to focus heavily on practical implementation and measurable success metrics.
Fleet Supplier of the Year
The Fleet Supplier of the Year Award has been designed to reflect the views of the industry itself.
Customers and fleet professionals will have an opportunity to vote for suppliers that consistently deliver strong service, support, and innovation.
The category is intended to recognise suppliers that genuinely understand the challenges fleet operators face and work collaboratively to improve outcomes.
Industry Voting Adds Accountability
Once the judges select three finalists in each category, the process moves into an industry voting phase from August through September.
Every person in the fleet industry will have the opportunity to cast one vote in each category, creating a transparent process where the winners are decided by their peers.
This approach ensures the awards reflect genuine industry respect and recognition rather than a closed judging process.
Finalists for the 2026 Fleet News Group Awards will be announced in August, with winners revealed at the awards presentation event in Sydney on 14 October 2026.
