Bendix is celebrating its 70th anniversary in Australia, marking seven decades of local manufacturing, innovation, and strong ties to both automotive manufacturers and the aftermarket.
The company began operations in Ballarat, Victoria in 1955 as Mintex Limited, producing brake linings with just 30 employees. By the mid-1960s, Bendix was supplying disc brake pads and had secured its first original equipment (OE) contracts with General Motors Holden and Chrysler. This early relationship with carmakers such as Ford, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissan established Bendix as a trusted supplier of braking solutions across Australia’s “golden era” of automotive manufacturing.
Adapting to Changing Markets
As local vehicle manufacturing declined, Bendix diversified its product offering to meet the needs of the aftermarket and fleet operators. Its product range today includes solutions for passenger cars, four-wheel drives, light commercial vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, and even light rail.
For fleets, Bendix offers tailored solutions such as:
- Ultimate 4WD™ range for operators who regularly tow or carry heavy loads.
- Ultimate+™ range designed for enhanced road vehicle performance.
- Ultimate™ Electric Brake Controllers supporting safety and compliance in towing operations.
- Brake upgrade kits for vehicles needing improved braking performance in demanding conditions.
The company has also invested in engineering brake pads for hybrid and electric vehicles, reflecting the needs of a changing vehicle market.
Investment in Technology and Local Capability
Bendix continues to manufacture in Ballarat, employing around 120 people and maintaining critical sovereign capability in automotive components. The site also houses the company’s research, development, and testing headquarters.
Recent investments include:
- Specialised grinding equipment for advanced pad geometries, improving performance and reducing noise.
- Robotics and additional tooling to improve line efficiency.
- An expanded warehouse and streamlined ‘on line’ boxing system to improve order fulfilment.
- Plans for low-volume, made-to-order products to better meet niche industry requirements.
For fleets managing a wide mix of vehicles, the ability to source Australian-made, fit-for-purpose brake solutions can provide greater reliability and reduce risks associated with downtime.
From its beginnings as a supplier to Holden in the 1960s to its current role serving fleets, recreational users, and global export markets, Bendix has consistently adapted to industry shifts. Its continued focus on research, development, and Australian-based manufacturing positions the company to support fleet operators transitioning to new vehicle technologies, including EVs and hybrids.
To celebrate the milestone, Bendix will host a series of events in 2025, culminating in a public open day in November featuring the Bendix Racing Team.
