With the 2025 IPWEA Fleet Conference just around the corner, we sat down with Marc Sibbald, Director – Fleet at IPWEA, to get his take on the must-see highlights. From factory tours to keynote speakers and networking events, here’s what Marc recommends for delegates heading to Brisbane.
Q: Marc, what are you most looking forward to at this year’s conference?
Marc Sibbald: The best part of the IPWEA Fleet Conference is always catching up with fleet practitioners—the people who live and breathe fleet management every day. It’s one thing to talk about best practices, but it’s another to hear real-world case studies from people in councils and utilities who are solving the same challenges we all face.
That’s what makes this conference different—you’re not just listening to consultants, you’re hearing from your peerswho have actually implemented strategies and can tell you what worked and what didn’t. If you’re serious about improving your fleet operations, this is the place to be.
Q: The Volvo Trucks factory tour on Monday is a big drawcard. Why is this a must-see?
Marc: This is a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and see how Volvo and Mack trucks are built right here in Brisbane. Seeing the manufacturing process up close is always impressive, but what I think will be most valuable is the chance to hear from Volvo’s senior executives about their plans to reduce emissions in transport fleets.
We all know that alternative powertrains—whether electric, hydrogen, or biofuels—are coming, but what does that look like for heavy vehicles? This tour will give us insights into where the industry is heading and what fleet managers need to be thinking about right now to prepare for the future.
Q: What makes the exhibitor space worth visiting?
Marc: The exhibitor space is where the best conversations happen. It’s your chance to ask suppliers questions directly, see product innovations up close, and get real answers in an informal setting. Whether it’s telematics, fleet management software, maintenance solutions, or vehicle technology, the exhibitors cover everything fleet practitioners need to know.
I always tell people—don’t just walk through and collect brochures. Take the time to talk to the exhibitors, ask the tough questions, and challenge them on how their products can actually help your fleet.
Q: The networking event is always a big highlight. What can delegates expect this year?
Marc: The networking event is where we all get to unwind, have a laugh, and catch up with old friends. This year, we’re at Hops Valley Brewing in Fortitude Valley, which is a fantastic venue to enjoy a quiet ale or two after a full day of learning.
To make things interesting, we’ve added a sporting-themed trivia challenge, with some great prizes from Platinum Sponsor Hino Australia. Whether you’re an NRL, AFL, or cricket fan, expect some good-natured rivalry between states—it’s all in fun, but I’d recommend brushing up on your sports trivia if you want to take home a prize!
Q: Finally, the opening keynote is always a big moment. What are your thoughts on John Cadogan as this year’s speaker?
Marc: If you’ve seen John Cadogan on YouTube, you’ll know this keynote is going to be entertaining, provocative, and probably a little controversial! He’s known for calling out industry nonsense and getting straight to the point, so I expect a lively discussion.
That said, behind the entertainment, John knows his stuff, and I think he’ll bring some strong opinions on fleet management, vehicle technology, and the future of transport in Australia. Whether you agree with him or not, I guarantee you’ll leave the session thinking differently about the challenges facing fleet managers today.
Q: Any final words for delegates attending the conference?
Marc: My advice is simple—make the most of it! Go to the sessions, ask questions, meet new people, and don’t be afraid to challenge the speakers and exhibitors. Fleet management is evolving fast, and this conference is your chance to stay ahead of the curve.
And of course—have fun! Brisbane is a great city, and with this lineup of speakers, site visits, and networking opportunities, it’s going to be a fantastic few days. See you there!
