Ford Australia will expand its electrified van offering in Australia, adding the Transit Custom PHEV to its local line-up as part of a broader decision to focus more heavily on fleet and commercial vehicles.
In the same announcement Ford outlined that it has decided not to bring the fully-electric Puma Gen-E to Australia, citing changing EV market conditions.
The Transit Custom PHEV will be sold alongside Ford’s other plug-in option, the hotly-anticipated Ranger PHEV, as well as the fully-electric E-Transit Custom and E-Transit. Of course, the ICE Transit range will remain available, giving fleet buyers the choice of diesel, PHEV or EV powertrains.
“Ford Australia remains fully committed to offering low- or zero-emissions vehicles to Australians, particularly in the commercial sector,” said Ambrose Henderson, Marketing Director, Ford Australia.
“While much focus has been put on electrifying vehicles favoured by private buyers, it’s also vital that Australia’s businesses are not left behind in the electric transition. Ford Australia is dedicated to offering vehicles that not only allow them to get their jobs done but also lower their emissions in the process.”
Realigning its electric vehicle line-up by offering the Ford Transit Custom PHEV and Ranger PHEV in Australia is an important step, as the brand commits to helping businesses and fleets decarbonise without sacrificing on vehicle capability or productivity.
The Transit Custom PHEV will be powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with an 11.8kWh battery, with a targeted WLTP electric-only driving range of more than 40km. Like the Ranger PHEV, the Transit Custom PHEV will offer EV Now, EV Later, and EV Auto drive modes.
“The addition of the PHEV to our local Transit Custom line-up means customers are able to conduct their shorter, inner urban, style trips on electric only power, with the freedom to make longer rural trips quickly and easily when required,” said Myles Hartley, General Manager, Electric Vehicles, Ford Australia.
“If the customer simply plugs in the Transit Custom each night like they would their phone, then they can make a significant impact on their ownership and running costs.
“Along with the all-new Transit Custom PHEV and E-Transit Custom, proven E-Transit, and exciting Ranger PHEV, we look forward to launching the updated MY25 Mustang Mach-E in Australia next year,” added Hartley.
The Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid is expected to arrive in Australia Q3, 2025. More details such as pricing and spec, will be announced closer to launch.
