Jaecoo has completed its J5 compact SUV range with the arrival of a new hybrid model, giving Australian buyers a middle ground between the existing petrol and fully electric versions.
For Fleet Managers and novated lease buyers, the key attraction is straightforward: lower claimed fuel consumption without needing to organise workplace, depot or home charging.
Series-parallel hybrid powertrain
Unlike the plug-in hybrid systems used in Jaecoo’s larger J7 and J8 SHS models, the J5 uses a conventional series-parallel hybrid system that does not require external charging.
It combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 105kW and 215Nm with a permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor rated at 150kW and 310Nm.
Jaecoo quotes a combined system output of 165kW and 295Nm, with power delivered to the front wheels through a dedicated hybrid transmission.
Combined-cycle fuel consumption is listed at 5.6L/100km, while claimed carbon dioxide emissions are 126g/km.
Those numbers should make the J5 Hybrid relevant to fleets looking to reduce fuel use and emissions while retaining the familiar operating model of a petrol vehicle. Drivers simply refuel it at a service station, removing the need to manage charging behaviour or infrastructure.
One well-equipped specification
Jaecoo has chosen to keep the local range simple, offering the hybrid exclusively in Summit trim.

The petrol and hybrid variants share the same basic exterior design, although the hybrid is distinguished by its Aero-style wheels.
Built for pets—and busy drivers
Jaecoo is also promoting the J5’s pet-friendly interior, which uses synthetic leather made from a silicone-based material.
The company says the material is antibacterial, wear-resistant and easier to clean than conventional upholstery. That feature may also prove useful for fleet vehicles exposed to muddy workwear, frequent passenger changes or demanding daily use.
Acoustic glass for the front doors is also included, potentially improving cabin comfort for drivers spending extended periods on the road.
Safety and ownership support
The J5 Hybrid comes with seven airbags and a suite of driver-assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and emergency lane keeping.
Ownership support includes an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre battery warranty.
Jaecoo is also offering eight years of capped-price servicing and up to eight years of roadside assistance.
That combination could help provide useful cost certainty for private buyers and organisations planning to retain vehicles for longer replacement cycles.
With petrol, hybrid and electric versions now available, the J5 range gives buyers a choice between three different approaches. The hybrid is likely to be the easiest transition for fleets and novated lease customers wanting improved fuel efficiency without changing how or where they refuel.
