Qantas has partnered with Mercedes-Benz and Sydney Airport to introduce a chauffeured terminal transfer service for selected First Class passengers, putting premium vehicles at the centre of the airline’s customer experience.
The new service will transport invited Qantas First customers between Sydney Airport’s T1 International and T3 Domestic terminals in a Mercedes-Maybach, providing an airside alternative to the normal passenger transfer process.
Running from September to November, the initiative is being used by Qantas to gather customer feedback and assess how a more direct transfer service can improve the experience for passengers connecting between international and domestic flights.
For fleet operators, the partnership provides an interesting example of how vehicles can form part of a broader customer service strategy rather than simply performing a transport function.
Qantas Executive Manager Product and Service, Sarah Udy, said reducing friction during the connection process was a key objective.
“As the only airline in Australia to offer this premium transit service, this enhancement is designed to make it easier and more comfortable for our First customers,” Udy said.
Under the service, a Qantas Host will meet eligible customers following arrival and escort them to a waiting Mercedes-Maybach for the transfer between terminals.
The concept follows customer research that found First Class travellers placed a high value on speed and simplicity, as well as maximising the time they could spend in the lounge rather than travelling between terminals.
That focus on the complete customer journey is also relevant to organisations operating passenger transport, executive fleets and other customer-facing vehicles, where vehicle selection can influence perceptions of the wider service.
Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific CEO Homero Becerra said the partnership aligned the vehicle with the premium experience Qantas was seeking to deliver.
“Our partnership with Qantas brings together two brands united by a shared commitment to delivering experiences that are premium, effortless and seamless,” Becerra said.
Sydney Airport General Manager Passenger Experience Leanne Geraghty said the transfer service was also intended to remove one of the friction points associated with connecting through the airport.
“Making connections between terminals faster, simpler and more seamless is a great win for our passengers, particularly those travelling long-haul and connecting onward domestically,” Geraghty said.
The initiative highlights a broader opportunity for vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators to consider the role a vehicle plays within a service experience.
While procurement decisions traditionally focus on factors such as whole-of-life cost, safety, reliability and operational suitability, fleets used in customer-facing applications can also become an important part of an organisation’s brand and service delivery.
For Mercedes-Benz, the Qantas partnership also puts the Maybach product into a controlled, high-profile operating environment where customers can experience the vehicle as part of a wider premium service rather than through a traditional showroom or marketing campaign.
The Qantas First transfer service will initially be available to invited customers travelling on a Qantas First Class fare, with feedback gathered during the three-month initiative helping inform its future.
