Toyota’s move into plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles does not signal the end of hybrid’s importance to Australian fleets. Instead, the company’s latest product strategy suggests hybrid will remain the volume lower-emissions option for many fleet applications well into the next decade.
Toyota Australia expects efficiency hybrid vehicles to account for 39 per cent of its sales in 2026. That is a significant share of the new-vehicle market for a technology that, 25 years ago, was largely represented by the niche Prius.
John Pappas, Vice President of National Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia, told Fleet News Group the company’s decision to introduce hybrid technology first had enabled customers to reduce fuel use and emissions without requiring charging infrastructure or changes to ownership routines.
“Hybrid technology allowed customers to lower emissions without changing their behaviour,” Pappas said.
“There was no need for charging infrastructure, no changes to ownership routines, and importantly, hybrids delivered strong fuel efficiency alongside the quality, durability, and reliability Toyota is known for.”
Toyota introduced the Prius to Australia in 2001, when hybrid vehicles represented 0.1 per cent of its model range. By 2016, hybrid accounted for just under five per cent of Toyota’s Australian lineup.
The shift accelerated rapidly after that. Toyota says hybrid represented about 30 per cent of its Australian sales by the end of 2021, while the company surpassed 500,000 hybrid vehicle sales in Australia during 2024.
That growth has reshaped fleet replacement decisions, particularly for passenger cars and SUVs operating in urban and metropolitan environments.
For many fleets, hybrid has offered an immediate reduction in fuel use without the operational changes associated with plug-in vehicles. There is no need to install charging infrastructure, manage driver reimbursement for home electricity, or redesign routes around charging availability.
Ray Munday, Senior Manager Product Planning and Pricing at Toyota Motor Corporation Australia, said hybrid remained a practical choice for customers who spend much of their time in urban traffic but need unrestricted long-distance travel capability.
“A hybrid electric vehicle can combine the convenience of a petrol ICE engine with a small battery to have significant fuel savings in urban environments and maintain long-distance driving range with very fast refuel times, which is important for many fleet operators,” Munday said.
Toyota’s Camry provides one example of the technology’s development. The locally built 2010 Camry Hybrid produced 140kW and had combined fuel consumption of six litres per 100km, according to Toyota.
The current Camry uses Toyota’s fifth-generation 2.5-litre hybrid system, producing 170kW with claimed combined fuel consumption of four litres per 100km.
Munday said hybrid development had involved more than fuel economy gains.
“It’s more than just the numbers,” he said. “The new Camry hybrid delivers outstanding levels of refinement and drivability.”
Toyota’s hybrid strategy has also changed the availability of petrol-only models. In June 2024, Toyota stopped selling petrol-only variants on models where hybrid powertrains were available, moving nine models to hybrid-only powertrains.
For fleet buyers, that means hybrid is no longer a specialist alternative in some key vehicle segments. It is increasingly the default powertrain choice.
Toyota’s newest products extend that strategy rather than replace it. The RAV4 PHEV gives fleets with reliable home or workplace charging an opportunity to add electric-only driving to a familiar petrol-hybrid format. The HiLux BEV targets defined return-to-base applications in mining, energy, government and construction.
However, Toyota is clear that these technologies will not suit every role.
Munday said diesel would remain relevant for long-distance towing, heavy loads and remote-area operations, while hybrid continued to offer a balance of efficiency, convenience and range for a broad section of the market.
“There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to motor vehicle powertrains, because every use case, every customer need or desire is different,” he said.
Toyota expects plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles to account for 30 per cent of its Australian sales by the end of 2030. But its forecast for 2026 shows hybrid will remain the dominant electrified technology in its range for now.
For fleets, that matters because decarbonisation plans do not need to begin with a full move to battery-electric vehicles. Hybrid remains a practical option for high-use vehicles without dependable charging access, while PHEV and BEV can be introduced where duty cycles and infrastructure support them.
Toyota’s hybrid strategy has already changed what fleet buyers expect from mainstream vehicles. Its next challenge is to ensure hybrid remains part of a broader fit-for-purpose transition, rather than becoming a reason to delay the applications that are ready to go further.
