The top five Subaru Automotive Technicians across the country have battled it out in the 2023 Subaru Australia Technician Competition for a coveted spot in the Subaru World Technician Competition held in Japan in June.
Every two years, Subaru Corporation in Japan hold a Subaru World Technician Competition in Tokyo, Japan.
After a four-year hiatus (due to the COVID pandemic) in June 2023 Subaru Corporation will be holding the 8th competition. There are 13 Subaru distributors, from 13 different countries, that will be competing, including Australia.
To find the best Subaru representative in Australia, Subaru Australia held the 2023 Australian Technical Competition Finals (top 5 technicians) to select the Australian representative to go to the Subaru World Technician Competition in Japan in June.
Australia’s top five finalists:
- James Daly – Eblen Subaru Glenelg, SA
- Graham Dell – Subaru Aspley, QLD
- Richard Fergusson – Eblen Subaru Glenelg, SA
- Brodie Rogers – Key Motors, QLD
- Nathan Rowney – Hunter Subaru, NSW
The five finalists were challenged to diagnose electrical and mechanical issues pre-programmed into multiple ‘stations’, including a written test, at the Subaru Academy Training Centre in Melbourne.
Time constraints applied for diagnosis, and Subaru Australia’s expert Technical and Training team oversaw the competition, so contestants faced significant pressure.
After a challenging competition, Richard Fergusson of Eblen Subaru Glenelg has been proudly named the winning Technician and will represent Australia on the world stage at the Subaru World Technician Competition in Japan in June.
Commenting on the win, Richard Fergusson, said: “It was a really tough competition and I’m really happy to win. I’m really looking forward to representing Australia in Japan and competing against the world’s best Subaru technicians.”
As the winner, Richard has been presented the Gary Mathews Memorial Award. This award commemorates Gary Mathews, who passed away in 2011 after a brave battle with cancer. Gary was a long-term employee at Eblen Subaru Glenelg and was a Subaru Master Technician who was held in very high regard with his peers and Subaru Australia.
Subaru Australia’s General Manager Ownership Experience, Mark Robinson, added: “Firstly, congratulations to all our finalists who all did amazingly well to make it to the 2023 Subaru Australia Technician Competition.
“It was an incredibly difficult competition, and all five finalists were challenged and stretched on the day. A big congratulations to Richard who has demonstrated exemplary skill and proved the best Subaru Technician in the country to represent Australia on the world stage. We wish Richard the best of luck in Japan in June.”
