Fleet News Group has officially launched the Fleet Vehicle Awards, a new national program designed to recognise the vehicles that deliver the best value to Australian fleet buyers.
These awards focus on what matters most to organisations managing vehicles every day — cost, capability, safety, sustainability, and long-term support. Rather than relying on popularity or marketing claims, the Fleet Vehicle Awards will be judged using the same procurement principles used by professional fleet managers when selecting vehicles for their operations.
The goal is simple: identify the vehicles that genuinely perform in real-world fleet applications.
A Practical, Procurement-Based Approach to Judging
The Fleet Vehicle Awards will be assessed using a structured Best Value Analysis framework — a method widely used across government, corporate, and commercial fleets to make objective vehicle purchasing decisions.
Each vehicle will be evaluated across five core criteria:
1) Whole-of-Life Cost (WOLC)
Purchase price is only the starting point. Judges will assess the total cost of owning and operating the vehicle, including fuel or energy use, maintenance, and resale value.
2) Work Space Ergonomics
The vehicle is a workplace. Judges will consider driver comfort, safety, ease of use, visibility, controls, and how well the vehicle supports productivity across a working day.
3) Carpark / Driveway Appeal
This reflects how well the vehicle suits modern operational environments — including operator feedback, model cycle, and future resale.
4) Sustainability and Safety
Vehicles will be assessed on emissions performance, energy efficiency, and safety technology. The focus is on practical outcomes that help organisations reduce risk and meet sustainability targets.
5) Manufacturer’s Commitment to Fleet
Support matters after the vehicle is delivered. Judges will consider dealer networks, service capability, parts availability, warranty coverage, and the manufacturer’s long-term commitment to fleet customers.
This structured approach reflects how fleet buyers actually make decisions — balancing cost, risk, and operational performance over the life of the vehicle.
Categories That Reflect the Real Fleet Market
The Fleet Vehicle Awards cover the major vehicle segments used across Australian fleets:
- Fleet Car of the Year
- Fleet EV of the Year
- Fleet Light Commercial Vehicle of the Year
- Fleet Light Duty Truck of the Year
- Fleet Heavy Duty Truck of the Year
- Novated Lease Vehicle of the Year
These categories ensure that vehicles are assessed against direct competitors operating in similar roles and applications.
Judged by Fleet Professionals
Unlike many awards programs, the Fleet Vehicle Awards will be determined by a panel of experienced fleet practitioners and industry specialists.
Finalist vehicles in each category will be brought together for an in-person evaluation day, where judges will inspect, drive, and assess each vehicle using the Best Value Analysis framework. This hands-on process ensures the results reflect real operational performance rather than marketing claims or brand reputation.
It also aligns with the broader philosophy behind the Fleet News Group Awards — transparency, industry participation, and decisions based on evidence.
Recognising Excellence in Fleet Procurement
Vehicle selection is one of the most important financial and operational decisions an organisation makes. A single procurement choice can influence safety outcomes, operating costs, driver satisfaction, and environmental performance for years.
The Fleet Vehicle Awards aim to provide the fleet community with a clear, credible benchmark for vehicle performance — helping organisations make more informed decisions and encouraging manufacturers to design products that better meet fleet requirements.
For fleet buyers, suppliers, and manufacturers, the message is straightforward: these awards are about results — not reputation.
