This car got the FAN office talking when it was launched earlier in 2021 because it evoked memories of the popular Holden Commodore SV6 and Calais. A large sedan with sports styling and luxury. We waited six months to drive it; was it worth the wait?
It was certainly worth looking at. The styling and lines on this car evoked emotions and desires we haven’t experienced for a while. And it wasn’t just us! Neighbours were gawking and stopping for a lingering look. Heads turned in carparks. Maybe it was the sensuous Flame red paint (which at the time of writing is no longer an option on the Hyundai website – too provocative).
To drive, as expected. A smooth, comfortable firm sports ride with enough of an exhaust note to entice the senses but not annoy the neighbours at 6am when you leave for pilates class.
The interior has all the nice touches that you would expect in a car retailing for $55k. It’s designed with a modern feel including the push button ‘driver by wire’ gear selectors being featured all top spec vehicles from Hyundai in 2022.
We loved the large 19″ wheels and wireless phone charging. The heated and cooled front seats which can be set to match the climate control, so they automatically ensure the driver is comfortable in all conditions, are a little slice of heaven. And electric driver’s seat with pre-programmed positions makes sharing the car with other drivers easy.
Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to stretch the legs of the Hyundai Sonata N Line on the open road. It looks, and feels like a thoroughbred that would thrive with a weekend away on some country roads, or Sunday drive along the coast.
Our short time with the Sonata N Line left us wanting more. It may be a low volume seller in a market dominated by small hatches and SUVs though we think there’s a niche opportunity for a car like this under $60k.
