Hyundai has responded to the positive announcements by state governments, which signal a move towards a zero emissions future for government fleets, by reducing the price on the electric Kona and introducing a new model lineup with different range options.
A price reduction will change the Whole of Life Cost calculations for many Fleet Managers that had been considering the purchase of electric vehicles. It will also encourage novated lease buyers to consider an EV option because the lower price and reduced running costs make it more attractive for metro driving.
The standard and extended range options are the equivalent of having different size fuel tanks in an ICE powered vehicle. Imagine if you were buying a new petrol or diesel car and the salesperson asked you to choose between a short or long range fuel tank. It would force you to think about the distance of your average trip. Most people would realise they only need the smaller fuel tank.
It could be considered a ‘marketing trick’ to reduce the sticker price and attract more buyers to zero emissions vehicles. If so, that’s great! Because, as people discuss the range issue associated with electric vehicles, they’ll realise that technology is changing rapidly and the battery range in electric vehicles is more than satisfactory for the majority of fleets.
Sharing all the technology, safety and convenience features, of its Extended Range siblings, the new 100kW / 39.2kWh entry powertrain makes the groundbreaking Kona Electric small SUV even more accessible than ever.
The renamed Kona Electric Extended Range (150kW / 64kWh) Elite and Highlander powertrain variants have received $1,500 and $2,000 MLP reductions respectively.
2021 Kona Electric revised model range
“The new Kona Electric Standard Range gives customers zero-emissions electric motoring in an attractive, sporty and practical small SUV, and at more accessible price.” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Jun Heo said.
“It is Hyundai’s intention to establish leadership for eco cars in Australia. We already have the most diverse range of electrified vehicles including Kona Electric, NEXO our hydrogen-powered SUV and the soon to launch game changing IONIQ 5.
“Hyundai is leading Australia’s charge towards a greener transport future.”
POWERTRAIN
The new Kona Electric Standard Range powertrain delivers ample performance thanks to the fitment of a 327V, 39.2kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.
The Standard Range 39.2kWh battery versions will continue to deliver Kona Electric’s renowned instant acceleration through a 100kW permanent-magnet synchronous motor, delivering 395Nm of torque.
The Standard Range powertrain offers a real-world all-electric range of up to 305km when tested to WLTP standards.
