Opening the 2025 Australasian Fleet Education & Leadership Summit, AfMA Executive Director Mace Hartley reminded attendees that while fleet is critical to every organisation, those managing it often receive the least support.
“Fleet matters. We are central to the delivery of most of the things our companies do,” Hartley said. “But we have this small set of resources, total responsibility, almost zero authority.”
His words struck a chord in a room filled with more than 900 fleet professionals—many of whom stood when asked to acknowledge their involvement in AfMA’s programs, training, and events.
This year’s summit also marked a milestone: 30 years of AfMA supporting the profession through education, advocacy, and connection. In that time, AfMA has grown to represent more than 1 million vehicles and developed industry-recognised resources including the Diploma of Leadership and Management and an extensive personal development webinar series.
Despite these achievements, Hartley’s message was clear—many Fleet Managers are still expected to “survive operational stuff coming at them” with little recognition or investment. He noted the irony that while the future of fleet management arrived years ago, most practitioners lack the time and tools to plan or innovate.
“We do not exist without all of you,” Hartley told attendees. “It’s the reason I get up every day. It’s the reason my 10 staff do what they do—to help you.”
With renewed commitment to supporting future leaders and solving complex problems, AfMA’s next chapter is just getting started.
