We know that vehicle design changes over time. Older cars always look dated once the a new model has been released. Manufacturers follow themes so their entire range can be identified as part of the brand family. Traditionally this works with sedans and SUVS. But what happens when a brand unveils a futuristic design for a new people mover, that will also be the platform for their delivery van?
The all new head turning Hyundai STARIA is aiming for a seat at the table with the cool kids. With an AWD option, eight seats and a range of safety features and technology, Hyundai expects the STARIA to interest some traditional large SUV buyers.
Engineered from the ground up on a dedicated passenger car platform shared with Santa Fe, STARIA provides car-like handling, ride and refinement. It also has Hyundai’s in-house developed HTRAC AWD system, which is unique at this specification price point (approximately $20k below the AWD people mover alternative on the Australian market).
Front-wheel drive is also offered, teamed with a 200kW 3.5-litre MPi petrol, while AWD variants are powered by a 430Nm 2.2 CRDi turbo-diesel – both are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
STARIA can also tow, with an ample 2500kg capacity. It is an exceptionally versatile vehicle.
All-new STARIA’s cruise ship-inspired, super-practical interior is headlined by cutting-edge tech, in the form of dual 10.25-inch displays – a Satellite Navigation multimedia system and a full digital virtual instrument cluster.
There are also sliding and folding seats inside, featuring real leather upholstery in flagship versions, as well as a wireless smartphone charger, five USB charging ports, and a grand total of 16 cupholders, with masses of space behind the third row, power operated smart sliding side doors and a power tailgate with walk-away function.
Further convenience features include a Smart Key with Push Button and Remote Start, and Blind Spot View (BVM), Surround View (SVM) and a Rear Passenger View Monitor.
A segment-leading selection of leading-edge SmartSenseTM advanced safety and driver assistance technologies includes firsts such as a Blind-spot view monitor, and Hyundai’s pioneering front centre side airbag, as a part of a seven-airbag suite.
There are also standard Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist (FCA-JT), Blind Spot Collision Avoidance-Assist (BCA-R) and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) systems.
STARIA represents a bold leap forward that brings a truly competitive offering to the people mover segment, to give customers the space, freedom and flexibility for any adventure they can imagine.
“All-new STARIA is a head-turning eight-seater people mover alternative to our SUV favourites, Santa Fe and Palisade, with all the safety, comfort and convenience technology customers expect in a modern passenger vehicle,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Jun Heo said.

STARIA is available in five colours: Abyss Black, Moonlight Blue and Gaia Brown Mica, and Graphite Grey and Olivine Grey Metallic.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Space, comfort and cutting-edge technology combine in STARIA’s cruise-ship inspired cabin, with a clean, functional and ergonomic dash design headlined by a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster in the driver’s line of sight.
There is also an eight- or 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia unit (depending on the variant) positioned for easy viewing atop the centre stack.
Light and a commanding view of the outside world stream into the cabin through the panoramic side windows, enhancing the sense of space.
Sliding second-row seats on long runners enable simple entry and egress as well as easy adjustment, and there are ISOFIX anchors for two child seats as well as three top tether points.
Two USB-A charging ports for each rear row, along with 10 cup/bottle holders, and second-row seatback storage pockets ensure everyone in the back is looked after.
A boarding step and ‘walk-in device’ sliding function for the second row creates up to an extra 100mm of foot clearance for easy third-row access.
Second- and third-row sunshades give rear passengers the option to block out the glare and heat of the sun.
There is black cloth upholstery in STARIA variants, with luxurious and easy-to-clean black leather in the Elite variant, or a choice of Blue or Beige leather in Highlander.
Highlander brings in even more light with the addition of a front and rear sunroof.
STARIA’s seats can be adjusted in a variety of configurations to suit different lifestyles and needs, with the benefit of flat-folding rear seatbacks, and a third-row bench tip-up function that opens up 1303 litres of cargo volume.
ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN
STARIA is offered with a choice of a powerful petrol V6 or a torquey turbo-diesel. The Smartstream 3.5-litre V6 MPi petrol engine produces 200kW and 331Nm paired with front-wheel drive. It uses 10.5L/100km on the official combined cycle.
The ‘R’ designated 2.2-litre four-cylinder CRDi engine produces 130kW and 430Nm and is teamed with all-wheel drive. It uses 8.2 L/100km on the official combined cycle.

HTRAC advanced all-wheel drive system
STARIA’s advanced in-house developed HTRAC all-wheel drive system gives the model a clear point of difference from traditional people movers. Towing capacity is 2.5 tonnes.
The HTRAC AWD in STARIA turbo-diesel variants feature an electronic, variable-torque-split clutch with active torque control between the front and rear axles.
As well as apportioning torque between the front and rear the system can vary the torque distribution between left and right wheels by applying braking to the opposite wheel, based on inputs from vehicle speed and other sensors.
Additionally, STARIA features a 4WD lock to distribute power evenly to all four wheels in off-road situations.
Drive Modes
Driver-selectable Normal, Eco, Sport and Smart modes in STARIA apply a range of powertrain response settings to provide the ideal driving performance to suit the conditions.
Sport mode, for example, sharpens the throttle response and holds gear to let the engine rev higher for a livelier driving feel. Eco mode provides the optimum characteristics for fuel efficient driving, while Normal provides a useful balance between the two.
Finally, Smart mode works with a driver profile system to tailor STARIA’s performance to the driver’s preferences.
The Drive Mode system also varies the HTRAC AWD’s torque distribution to allow for confident control across the spectrum of driving conditions.
SAFETY
All-new STARIA features a standard suite of SmartSense™ advanced active safety and driver assistance features. There are also seven airbags, including Hyundai’s pioneering front centre side airbag.
Mounted in the left side of the driver’s seat backrest, it’s designed to prevent or reduce the severity of injuries caused by collisions of front passengers with each other, or with interior components, in the event of a side impact collision.

STARIA’s SmartSenseTM suite includes the following technologies:
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA- Car/Pedestrian/Cyclist)
The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system uses a windscreen-mounted camera and radar to detect other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in front of STARIA. If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the cluster. FCW is active between 5km/h and 160km/h.
Additionally, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning). FCA is active above speeds of approximately 8 km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 50 km/h.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist-Junction Turning (FCA-JT)
STARIA’s Junction Turning (FCA-JT) function detects oncoming traffic when turning right (with the right indicator activated) at an intersection. If the system senses a collision is likely, it will apply the brakes. FCA-JT is operational at vehicle speeds between 7 km/h and 30 km/h, and can detect oncoming vehicles travelling at approximately 30 km/h to 70 km/h.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)
STARIA’s Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist system (BCA) consists of two functions – Blind Spot Collision Warning (BCW) and Active BCA.
At speeds of 30 km/h and above, BCW uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect STARIA’s positioning within the lane, and relies on radar sensors on either side of the rear bumper to detect vehicles next to and diagonally behind. If a vehicle is present in STARIA’s blind spot, BCW displays an alert in the exterior mirrors. If the driver proceeds to activate the corresponding indicator lights, a flashing visual warning is provided, and an alert is sounded.
The system also scans for vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear and uses the same warning measures to alert the driver to the presence of vehicles that may soon enter STARIA’s blind spot.
Operational at speeds between 60 km/h and 180 km/h, the Active BCA can initiate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to help avoid a collision with an approaching vehicle, next to or behind STARIA which it deems as being at a high risk of contact due to its proximity. As an active avoidance manoeuvre the ESC system will apply gentle braking force to the wheels on the opposite side to the collision risk to steer the vehicle away from danger, reducing the likelihood of collision and/or helping to mitigate damage.
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
The Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) monitors for traffic approaching on either side of STARIA when reversing out of perpendicular parking spaces using the BCA system’s radar sensors, at speeds of 10 km/h and under. Should RCCA detect a vehicle approaching, a warning will sound, and visual warnings will be displayed on the dash cluster and multimedia screen, and in the corresponding exterior mirror.
In the event the driver does not initiate evasive action in response to a warning, the system will apply braking force to help avoid a collision with the approaching vehicle – it can detect approaching vehicles travelling at speeds between 8km/h and 36km/h.
High Beam Assist (HBA)
High Beam Assist (HBA) scans the road ahead of STARIA using the windscreen-mounted camera, monitoring for streetlights, as well as headlights and taillights of vehicles ahead. Upon detection, the system automatically adjusts headlight range, switching between high and low beam.
HBA is active at speeds of 35km/h and above. It is operational when the headlight switch on the indicator lever is placed in the Auto position and the lever is pushed forward.
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System
The Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System consists of two modes – Lane Departure Warning (LDW) mode, and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) mode.
LDW uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect lane markings and monitor the vehicle’s position in the lane. Should the vehicle stray from the intended lane without indicators being activated, audible and visual warnings will be issued. The system operates at vehicle speeds of 64 km/h and above.
LKA helps prevent the vehicle from straying from the lane by providing steering intervention should the driver not react to warnings from the LDW system. It can be activated at speeds of 64km/h and above where lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are detected. Both LKA and LDW are momentarily deactivated when the turn signals are active. Additionally, the driver must maintain control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel.
Lane Following Assist (LFA)
Lane Following Assist (LFA) uses the front windscreen-mounted camera to detect lane markings on the road and provides steering assistance to ensure the vehicle stays in the centre of the lane. If activated via the ‘User Settings’ menu in the dash cluster, LFA is active whenever Smart Cruise Control is operating and lane markers are detected, at vehicle speeds up to 150km/h.

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go detects the speed and distance of vehicles ahead of STARIA to maintain a safe following distance, up to a pre-set speed in the range 30km/h to 160km/h. The driver can set a preferred distance level from four settings, with the corresponding distance relative to the speed of the other vehicle.
The Stop & Go function works in stop/start traffic, bringing STARIA to a stop when appropriate, and automatically (if within 3 seconds) accelerating it back to the set speed.
Safe Exit Assist (SEA)
The Safe Exit Assist (SEA) system is designed to prevent occupants from exiting STARIA in unsafe situations. The system works in conjunction with the radar sensors on either side of the rear bumper to detect vehicles approaching from the rear. When the vehicle is stopped and SEA is active, the system scans the rear path of the vehicle. If a door is opened while an approaching vehicle is detected, the system will sound an alert and display a warning in the instrument cluster advising occupants to ‘Watch for traffic’.
Elite and Highlander grades’ power doors provide an additional layer of safety by physically preventing the opening of the rear doors when it is unsafe to do so, with a cluster warning advising occupants to ‘Check surroundings then try again.’
Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM)
Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) projects an image of the blind spot in the 10.25in LCD dash cluster when a turn signal is operated, using cameras mounted in the exterior mirrors.
The system assists in carrying out safer lane changes, by increasing the driver’s field of vision compared with conventional mirrors.
Surround View Monitor (SVM) – with 3D view
STARIA uses four cameras to give the driver a bird’s eye view of the car’s exterior, so they can have complete confidence when maneuvering into or out of spaces. Elite and Highlander variants gain an additional full 3D view of the vehicle.
A Rear View Monitor (RVM) feature allows the rear camera to be turned on continuously while driving, so that the driver can monitor the road conditions behind the vehicle. A Parking Guidance function displays guidelines that swivel automatically as the steering wheel is turned.
Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)
The Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) system aims to prevent the unintentional locking in or leaving behind of children or pets in STARIA. When active, the system detects occupant entry via the rear doors opening and closing. ROA issues a warning chime and prompts the driver with a cluster warning message to ‘Check rear seats’ when they open the front door after parking.
Driver Attention Warning (DAW) with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA)
Driver Attention Warning (DAW) continually monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane using the windscreen-mounted camera, while tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, and elapsed time since last break.
If the system detects careless driving – such as sudden steering/braking inputs and/or inability to keep within a lane – the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease.
If the level decreases to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver takes a break. DAW is in operation at speeds between 60km/h and 180km/h.
The system also features Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, which monitors the vehicle ahead when STARIA is stopped in traffic.
If the vehicle ahead drives off, and the STARIA driver does not accelerate away, the system will sound a chime to alert the potentially inattentive driver.
Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA)
Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA) helps the driver stay within the speed limit by telling them the limit of the road they’re on, based on road sign information detected using the windscreen-mounted camera, as well as navigation system data.
The system will also prompt the driver to change the set cruise control speed when using either the Manual Speed Limit Assist or Smart Cruise Control.
If the speed limit of the road changes during the operation of Manual Speed Limit Assist or Smart Cruise Control, an up or down arrow is displayed to inform the driver that the set speed needs to be changed.
The driver can then change the set speed using the plus/minus steering wheel buttons.

The sliding doors feature an anti-pinch safety feature which prevents them from closing if an obstruction is detected.
The sliding doors can also be opened and closed via the Smart Key button, the door handle push buttons, or using interior switches mounted on the A-pillars and above the front seats.
Smart Power Tailgate
The Smart Power Tailgate makes accessing STARIA’s vast cargo space effortless.
To operate it, the feature must first be enabled in the ‘Vehicle’ menu in the infotainment settings. Once enabled, the system automatically becomes active 15 seconds after all the doors are closed and locked. Door opening is triggered by entering the detection zone – within 50-100cm of the tailgate – with the Smart Key. An alert will sound and the hazard lights will flash and, should the user remain in this area for three seconds, the tailgate will automatically open.
The tailgate can also be opened using the switch or Smart Key button. Opening/closing speed and lift height are easily adjusted to suit personal preferences from the ‘Vehicle’ menu in the infotainment settings.
Tailgate Walk-Away Close
If the Smart Power Tailgate is enabled, it will close automatically when the Smart Key is no longer detected, after sounding an alert and flashing the hazard lights. This function can be disabled when needed by pressing the button on the tailgate.
Power Doors and Tailgate – all open / close via Smart Key
A three-second press on the Smart Key unlock button simultaneously opens both of STARIA’s power doors and the tailgate, after sounding an alert and flashing the hazard lights, for maximum ease of access.
Holding the lock button on the Smart Key remote for three seconds simultaneously closes the power doors and tailgate.
This function can also be combined with the Remote Power Windows function, also found in the ‘Vehicle’ menu in the infotainment settings.
Front & Rear zone climate control air conditioning
A climate control air conditioning system ensures maximum comfort and convenience for occupants by automatically maintaining the desired temperature. Two sets of automatic controls enable the front and rear occupants to set individual temperature zones.
Additionally, if the system detects a large difference between the climate control settings and the cabin temperature, the heated/ventilated seats and heated steering wheel will help keep occupants comfortable while the cabin reaches the desired temperature.
