Subaru’s fifth generation Impreza, longer and wider than the previous model, is more spacious and better equipped so it’s a pleasure to drive. Built on an all new global platform, Subaru has taken the Impreza to a new level of comfort with upgraded tech inclusions with a chassis that is responsive providing excellent handling when the road gets windy; but also provides a very comfortable and quiet ride as expected by Subaru buyers.
I had the pleasure of testing the top spec 2.0i S. Yes, it has all those extra nice features such as leather seats (heated in the front), sat nav, LED headlights (that are steering responsive), a sunroof and 18 inch alloys (225/40R18 Yokohama tyres); though even without these luxuries its an impressive drive.
Subaru has safety in its DNA so the good tech stuff isn’t just reserved for the top of the line. Subaru’s excellent EyeSight Driver Assist system (Adaptive cruise control, lane departure lane sway warning, and automatic emergency braking) is standard in all models in the Impreza range except the entry level 2.0i.
Apple Car Play/Android Auto is standard across the entire range as is Bluetooth connectivity, Smart key and push button start, tyre pressure monitoring, USB ports and a reverse camera.
This new generation Impreza is pretty easy on the eye as well, with striking lines that distinguish it from the crowd and definitely leave you in no doubt it is a Subaru. On the inside for the driver the seating position is eight way power adjustable (2.0i S only) all controls are within easy touch/reach and the information displays are easy to see. This is a comfortable car for both driver and passengers with plenty of room in the back seat for kids on weekends. Boot space in the sedan, is voluminous for a car this size at 440 litres.
You can have your choice of any number of combinations of engines and transmissions so long as it is a 2.0lt fuel injected DOHC petrol boxer engine producing 115kW/196Nm coupled with a seven speed CVT auto transmission (with manual made and paddle shifters). Combined fuel economy for the 2.0i S is 7.2lt/100km helped by the auto start/stop system for the engine in traffic and weight reductions made to this fifth generation car. CO2 emissions are 163 g/km.
This engine, transmission and comfortable interior make the Impreza a great city or everyday car, but the 2.0lt engine feels down on power when accelerating up to highway speeds, like entering a motorway or pulling out onto a country highway.
Having said that though, the Impreza is an absolute pleasure to drive. The car rides quietly and the chassis is beautifully balanced providing superb ride control and handling that is responsive and direct, but never compromises comfort. You could spend all day everyday in this car and be very happy; for the everyday it is just so liveable.
With five star ANCAP safety rating, three year unlimited kilometre warranty, roadside assist and capped price serving programs, Data Dot protection – Subaru’s just make sense. And the drive-away pricing is in the low $30K band it makes the 2.0i S is exceptionally good value by presenting like a much more expensive car than it is.
So when considering your next company car or novated lease vehicle, that will provide space and comfort to meet your needs, in and about town everyday, take a look at the Subaru Impreza, its Sensibly Impressive.
