Toyota has upgraded its Yaris range in Australia with a hybrid-only lineup priced from $28,500, ditching petrol-only models for good. This is good news for fleet buyers because the hybrid powertrain will help them reduce emissions. It’s also bad news for Fleet Managers because the higher entry level price point will increase capital spend.
The three-model range consists of the new entry-level Ascent Sport ($28,500), alongside the mid-range SX ($31,960) and the top-spec ZR ($34,530).
While the Ascent Sport is $3,700 more than the previous petrol-powered entry-level Yaris, the entire range now scores Toyota’s improved Safety Sense2 safety technology and latest generation multimedia system.
“Our hybrid lineup continues to grow and we know this is what our customers are asking for with hybrids making up 40.7 per cent of our sales to date this year,” said Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley.
“In the upgraded Yaris, the low fuel consumption and smooth performance of the hybrid powertrain provide a superb combination for a small city car while the addition of new safety, multimedia and convenience technologies will provide plenty of customer appeal.”
The three models are all powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with accompanying electric motor, together producing a combined output of 85kW, while drive is sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Toyota claims combined-cycle fuel consumption of 3.3l/100km for the hybrid Yaris models, which also produce just 76 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
Improved safety has been a major focus of the upgrade with all grades of the Yaris hatch featuring the latest Toyota Safety Sense2 driver assistance suite of technology.
The improved safety system includes auto emergency braking and a pre-collision safety system that now recognises motorcycles and oncoming vehicles in addition to cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles ahead using a number of cameras and sensors.
Toyota will offer a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and capped-price servicing for the first five years/75,000km, with each 12-month/15,000km service costing $245.10.
