As part of the launch of the all-new 2025 Isuzu N and F Series, Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) has introduced a clearer, more structured model naming system. The new convention gives fleet buyers, operators and body builders a faster and more accurate way to identify a truck’s key specifications straight from the model code.
Here’s a breakdown of how it works:
1. First Letter: Cab Style
The first letter in the model name identifies the cab type or platform. Examples include:
- N = Light-duty cab (N Series)
- F = Medium- to heavy-duty cab (F Series)
This gives an immediate indication of the truck’s general size and purpose.
2. Second Letter: GVM
The second letter describes the truck’s gross vehicle mass (GVM) range:
- L = Car licence under 4,500 kg
- M = (M = 6,000 kg)
- N = (N = 6,500 kg)
- P = 4,500kg / 7,500 kg
- R = 11,000 kg
- Q = 8,000kg / 8,700 kg
- S = Medium Duty
- V = Heavy-duty
This helps operators quickly identify if a model is suited for light, medium or heavy applications.
3. Third Letter: Axle Configuration and Suspension
The third letter refers to the axle setup and suspension type:
- R = 4×2 with leaf spring suspension
- D = 4×2 with air suspension
- L = 6×2 configuration
- S = 4×4 / AWD
- Z = 6×4 with leaf spring suspension
- Y = 6×4 with air suspension
This information is critical for understanding vehicle dynamics, particularly for applications like heavy freight, tilt trays or agitators.
Example: What Does “FVY 260-300” Mean?
Using the new naming system, a model like FVY 260-300 553 decodes as:
- F = Medium/Heavy-duty F Series cab
- V = Higher GVM range (FV Series)
- Y = 6×4 axle configuration with air suspension
- 260 = 26 tonne nominal GVM
- 300 = 300 horsepower engine
At a glance, buyers can now understand the fundamental configuration and suitability of each model without having to consult detailed brochures.
Why the Change Matters
The older naming conventions used terms like “Short,” “Medium,” and “Long” wheelbase, which could be confusing, especially when comparing across different model families.
The new structure introduced in the 2025 range:
- Improves clarity across the N and F Series
- Helps match trucks to operational needs faster
- Supports easier body building and vehicle customisation
- Reflects the move towards more technical product line-ups as emissions, safety, and application demands continue to grow
By modernising the model codes, Isuzu has made it simpler for customers to specify the right truck for their job — saving time, reducing mistakes, and improving whole-of-life vehicle planning.
