Safe vehicles and safe drivers are two of the core pillars of road safety. The issue which is emerging is that many drivers are finding themselves overwhelmed by safety technology in the vehicle. As a result, this may affect the type of vehicle that is purchased and confuse the driver when on the road and thus increasing their risk for a crash.
For the driver, the car goes beep, bing, pop, the steering wheel seems to have a mind of its own, cameras flash on, and so on. This is the technological quagmire of the modern car and the driver may be overwhelmed and shuts it all out.
But if I buy a 5 star ANCAP these issues don’t matter as I have a safe vehicle, is that right? I then discover most vehicles are 5 star, that’s great news. So a vehicle from five years ago to one now are just as safe… Hang on what, you’re telling me they aren’t, I’m so confused…
To help, the Australasian Fleet Management Association (AfMA) and the Department of Transport Victoria are working together to build two online short interactive courses to assist drivers in understanding vehicle safety. The subject of the first course will be ANCAP and it will contain information about its rating system and the importance of test date stamping. The second will focus on in-vehicle safety technologies.
To underpin the course, a short 17 question (10 minute) survey has been developed to gather information to support the courses content development, noting survey responses are anonymous.
The deadline for completion is April 6 and here is a link: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5513301/Vehicle-Safety-Survey
We hope you can take the time as part of your social isolation to complete the survey.
