It’s essential to monitor the performance of your fleet to ensure effective, efficient and safe service delivery, identify opportunities for improvement and develop a culture of continuous improvement. But how do you know if your fleet is performing well? One of the best approaches is to benchmark against similar fleets.
Fleet News Group is working with Fleetyr to provide benchmarks which can help guide your fleet towards best practice and maximum efficiency. Each month we’ll publish some statistics that can be used to compare the performance of your fleet.
Here’s some interesting statistics from April using data from Fleetyr customers in Australia and New Zealand.
- Average % of fleet that had Zero activity or movement in April – 7.9%
- Average % of fleet that was active less than 50% of days in April – 35.7%
- Average distance travelled for Light Commercial Assets in the month – 1,147km (38km a day)
- Average speeding event per driver per day – 0.55 (16 speeding events a month)
- Average litres of fuel filled up per active asset in April – 87.6 Litres
- % of kms driven on the weekends compared to week days – 18%
What can you see in the data?
Looking at the snapshot above, fleet optimisation is the easiest way to make an immediate impact to the bottom line. Companies could reduce their fleet size by 7.9% without any disruption to their business operations. Or, they could reduce their fleet size by 35.7% and then use ‘flex’ solutions like carshare or car subscription during peak periods.
Range anxiety may be real but not a valid reason to avoid a transition to electric cars. The average distance travelled by light commercial vehicles is 38km per day. This may be why Ford are launching the PHEV Ranger with an all electric battery range of 45km.
Speed kills. So are responsible officers within an organisation aware that drivers are speeding 16 times a month (this is average not median which means the problem is worst than most Fleet Managers will admit). The next question is, how fast are they going? If you don’t have telematics then take a look at the infringements. Remember, there’s no safe speeding.
Is a fleet vehicle a business tool or an employee benefit? This is a question many organisations struggle to answer when they are competing for talent in a tight labour market. If 18% of the driving is on weekends for personal travel, is a company car the most effective financial tool to attract and retain talent? Pool cars, a car allowance, or novated leasing are all alternatives to consider.
