Mercedes-Benz has released its updated Sprinter van range in Australia, with upgraded technology and safety features across models, and it includes the all-electric eSprinter.
The new range comes standard with the next-generation MBUX infotainment system, with a 10.25-inch touchscreen at its core, now with wireless smartphone connectivity.
Other features like headlight assist, daytime running lights, easy lane change indicators and a Mercedes-Benz emergency call system round out the technology updates.
A digital rear view mirror is optional for panel van variants, offering a full view of the rear, transmitting an image to the cabin when the view would otherwise be obscured.
The upgraded model range now includes more standard safety equipment too, adding Active Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Sign Assist, alongside existing features like adaptive cruise control, active brake assist, blind spot assist, and more.
For the first time, the Sprinter range includes thorax-protecting airbags as standard, supplementing existing frontal and side head-protecting airbags for both driver and passenger.
Rain-sensing wipers and automatic tyre pressure monitoring are new as well, and importantly the fuel capacity has been bumped from 71 litres up to 93 litres.
The Sprinter range uses various 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine variants, fitted to different models and body styles:
- 311 Panel Van: 84kW/300Nm
- 315/415 Panel Van: 110kW/340Nm
- 317/417/517 Panel Van: 517 Cab Chassis: 125kW/400Nm
- 319/419/519 Panel Van and 519 Cab Chassis: 140kW/450Nm
All engine variants send power to the rear wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, with an ECO start/stop function, and include a heavy-duty battery and a 22-litre AdBlue Tank.
For the first time, Australian customers can opt for an all-electric drivetrain with the new eSprinter, available in a choice of two panel van variants – an eSprinter MWB Van (81 kWh battery), and an eSprinter LWB Van (113 kWh battery).
The electric range of the eSprinter LWB Van, based on a European simulation using the WLTP cycle is up to 440km, and the simulated range based on the WLTP city cycle is up to 530km.
Electric variants offer cargo capacity of up to 14 cubic metres and are offered with a GVM of up to 4.25 tonnes, making the rear-wheel-drive eSprinter as practical as its internal combustion siblings.
The electric powertrain features two new developments: the efficient motor and the advanced electric rear axle. Both are installed for the first time in a battery-electric van from Mercedes-Benz. In both eSprinter models, the motor provides 150kW of peak output and torque of up to 400Nm.
All models include a five-year/250,000km warranty, a 24-hour roadside assist support package, and Mercedes-Benz Service Call/Breakdown Management. The eSprinter has an eight-year /160,000km high-voltage battery warranty.
The order books are now open for all Sprinter models, including electric variants, with deliveries expected to commence from August this year.
