On the opening day of the 2024 Australasian Fleet Summit, Jo Banney, Fleet Services Manager at Powerlink, delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the critical role of leadership and management in fleet education. She shared insights from her experiences, reflecting on the journey of navigating professional and personal challenges while pursuing advanced education with the AfMA Diploma of Leadership and Management.
She started by discussing one of the first milestones – the first assessment in June – which set the tone for the demanding yet rewarding journey ahead. Amidst the chaos of work, family responsibilities, job changes, and travel, the cohort focused on the common goal of obtaining a diploma. It unified her classmates and fostered a sense of camaraderie, as everyone navigated the complexities together.
According to Banney, the educational experience was enhanced by the convenience of technology, with course materials accessible via iPhone, making it easier to manage busy schedules. The curriculum covered essential subjects such as organisational behavior, change management, and strategic planning. Banney highlighted how these topics presented significant challenges but also moments of clarity and growth, pushing students towards excellence in management and personal development.
A key figure in this journey was Darren from Swinburne who provided unparalleled support and guidance. Banney praised Darren’s ability to simplify complex concepts, boost confidence, and offer unwavering support through both highs and lows. His leadership was instrumental in helping students overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
The program, delivered by Swinburne University, was further bolstered by the Toyota scholarship, which Banney was fortunate to receive. This financial support, combined with the professional guidance from experienced instructors, played a crucial role in the success of the graduates.
Reflecting on the graduates of 2023, Banney acknowledged their cognitive efforts and resilience. The educational journey, while challenging, was ultimately rewarding, contributing to significant personal and professional growth.
The speech underscored the importance of strong leadership and comprehensive management education in navigating the complexities of the fleet industry, setting a foundation for continued success and innovation.
