Each year Fleet News Group compiles a list of the most popular novated lease vehicles in Australia. This represents the cars being purchased by employees with salary sacrifice arrangements which makes it a true indication of the cars, SUVs and utes people want in their driveway.
In the 2022 top 10, the newest entrant was the Tesla Model 3. This is a significant change in preferences of new car buyers and signals the tipping point of electrification.
It’s the first year an electric vehicle has shown up in the list. In previous years the top 10 novated lease vehicles were 4X4 utes and SUVs. There hasn’t been a sedan on the list since it was first published in 2017 which makes it a double win for Tesla.
Each novated leasing provider contributing to the annual survey said they had noticed the shift since the Federal Labour Government confirmed the FBT Exemption for PHEV and EV. This new policy is designed to encourage organisations to add electric vehicles to their fleets and due to the nature of novated leasing, it also applies.
Another factor that contributed to the Tesla Model 3 making the list of top 10 popular novated lease vehicles is supply.
Tesla vehicles (Model Y and Model 3) sold in Australia are built in the China Gigafactory which opened in 2019 and has become the global export hub for Tesla. In 2022 the factory announced the completion of its one millionth vehicle.
So with consistent supply, supporting government policies, and unique offering to customers, Tesla is climbing the new car sales ladder in Australia with novated lease buyers snapping up every car they can.
