Nissan has launched its all-new seventh-generation Patrol model, taking the capable off-road nameplate into the future with a modern design, punchier powertrain and more technology.
The hotly-anticipated Y62 Patrol model was unveiled by president and CEO of Nissan Motor Co, Makoto Uchida, at an exclusive event in Abu Dhabi that saw royals, executives, dealers, media, and customers under the one roof.
Design changes are significant, inside and out, with a far more premium product to challenge its longtime rival Toyota LandCruiser. It’s certainly a far cry from the boxy, Jeep-like model that first wore the Patrol badge some 70 years ago.
Nissan has done away with the 5.6-litre V8 powerhouse used in the outgoing Y62 model, opting for a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 that produces 316kW/700Nm – which is seven percent more power and 25 percent more torque than the boisterous V8 could muster. Nissan also announced a naturally aspirated engine option 231kW/368Nm.
A nine-speed transmission drives all four wheels, while the hulking wagon rides on height-adjustable adaptive air suspension that is said to help boost its off-road prowess.
The technology offering far exceeds the outgoing model too, with a 28.6-inch horizontal display and dual 14.3-inch screens up front, dual 12.8-inch screens in the rear, ambient lighting, NissanConnect 2.0 with Google built-in, ProPILOT and Klipsch Premium Audio System.
The Nissan ProPILOT system will also make its debut in the new Patrol, with ADAS features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. The new model also features seven airbags, including knee airbags.
“The all-new Patrol is a prime example of the exciting and empowering models we are delivering under our global business plan, The Arc,” said Nissan Motor Co. President and CEO, Makoto Uchida.
“The seventh generation is a bold leap forward, blending unparalleled performance, cutting-edge technology and a commanding presence to redefine what an SUV can be.
“With its history of more than 70 years, the Patrol perfectly embodies our corporate purpose of ‘Driving innovation to enrich people’s lives.”
The new Patrol range is expected to land Down Under in late 2026, meaning the nearly 15-year-old Y62 will have to do for now.
