Fleet Auto News: How did you first get into fleet management?
Neil: Many years ago I saw the need for the ANU to have a full time fleet management position. The management saw the need for that also, and I worked my way into this position.
Fleet Auto News: Describe the type of fleet you and your team manage?
Neil: The ANU has very varied fleet including a Commercial vehicles for internal trades, Research vehicles for fieldwork, pool and executive vehicles, A total of approximately 200. There is also a range of plant and equipment (forklifts, tractors, trailers, lawn mower and electric buggies). The ANU fleet is managed by myself with a fleet assistant through a fleet management company.
Fleet Auto News: What does your role as fleet manager entail?
Neil: My role as fleet manager is to manage the operation of fleet services, contract management and oversee accident management, procurement and disposals. To provide ANU with a fleet management solution.
Fleet Auto News: What is it about fleet that you enjoy?
Neil: I love cars. I also enjoy buying new cars for people. Fleet is an ever-changing industry with new innovation around every corner. I enjoy the new technology. I also enjoy the ANU environment. It’s a great place to work.
Fleet Auto News: What has been your biggest challenge in fleet to date?
Neil: The ANU has lost a lot of funding, so we are all tasked to look for cost savings and efficiencies. We are currently looking to implement a pool vehicle/ car share arrangement.
Fleet Auto News: Is there a strong fleet community in Canberra?
Neil: Yes, there are a lot of government departments, agencies and ACT government.
Fleet Auto News: What are the top three challenges for a fleet manager today?
Neil: 1) Cost reduction and fleet utilisation, 2) Risk management, Driver safety and WHS, 3) Green initiatives
Fleet Auto News: What is your favourite car in a fleet?
Neil: My Ute! We also have a WRX.
Fleet Auto News: What is your dream car?
Neil: I’m a family man so I need 4 doors. I also love the outdoors, so sports luxury soft roader! Maybe a Porsche Macan. Too many to choose from.
Fleet Auto News: Will the end of local manufacturing change the type of vehicles in your fleet?
Neil: The ANU encourages Australian built vehicles and environmentally friendly vehicle choices, however we do have an flexible vehicle choice policy. We will always promote the best whole of life cost vehicles.
