Ampol has expanded AmpolCard to include public electric vehicle charging through its AmpCharge network, giving businesses a single payment platform as their fleets diversify.
The offering brings fuel, on-the-go convenience purchases and public EV charging onto one card and account, with unified billing, reporting and account management.
All AmpCharge public charging sites across Australia are now accessible through AmpolCard, with drivers using a physical RFID-enabled card to access charging.
For fleet managers, the change addresses a practical challenge of introducing EVs: managing another payment process alongside existing fuel accounts.
While vehicle replacement happens progressively, businesses can operate petrol, diesel and electric vehicles together for years. Consolidating energy payments can help reduce administration during that transition.
Ampol Executive General Manager, Commercial Fuels and Energy, Brent Merrick said the expansion would support businesses already operating EVs and those considering them.
“As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to grow across commercial fleets, the expansion of AmpolCard to include EV charging is designed to support Australian businesses – whether they have already embraced EVs as a practical fleet solution or are contemplating transitioning,” Merrick said.
“By offering a simple, low-complexity integration with the current AmpolCard platform, our customers can continue to manage their energy needs, particularly with commercial fleets increasingly operating a mix of petrol, diesel and electric vehicles.”
The fleet benefit extends beyond the transaction at the charger. Bringing public charging expenditure into the same account as petrol and diesel can simplify reconciliation and provide a consolidated view of energy purchases made through AmpolCard.
It also gives businesses an established payment option when introducing their first EVs, helping fleet teams accommodate new vehicles within existing administrative processes.
The announcement follows Ampol’s proposed acquisition of Evie Networks, which is subject to ACCC clearance and is expected to add more than 1,000 EV charging bays to Ampol’s network.
For fleet managers reviewing their next vehicle purchases, the AmpolCard expansion demonstrates how fuel payment providers are adapting to mixed fleets. Vehicle suitability, charging access and operating costs remain central to procurement decisions, while simpler payment and reporting can make the day-to-day transition easier to manage.
