Updated 2020 Kona introduces additional standard safety as part of the Hyundai SmartSense™ suite of technologies, across a continuing four-grade range.
Every 2020 Kona from the range-opening Go variant features Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) systems as standard.
The range-opening 2020 Kona Go and the Kona Active feature a camera-based Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) City/Urban system with Forward Collision Warning (FCW).
2020 Kona Elite and Highlander variants continue to feature a camera and radar-based City/Urban/ Interurban FCA system with a Pedestrian Detection function.
In addition, every 2020 Kona model features a Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) system that progressively provides warnings and then steering intervention to help keep the SUV within the lane markings. Also standard is the Driver Attention Warning (DAW) system, which monitors driver attention level, and recommends the driver take a break as required.
2020 Kona Elite and Highlander gain Smart Cruise Control (SCC), which automatically maintains a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, by automatically slowing and accelerating Kona when driving in traffic.
“The 2020 Kona line-up builds on the broad appeal of our eye-catching small SUV, by making key SmartSense™ advanced safety technologies standard for every customer, regardless of their model grade choice,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia CEO, Mr. JW Lee.

SAFETY
As part of the standard safety upgrade for the 2020 Kona range, every variant benefits from newly standard SmartSense™ advanced safety technologies.
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – City/Urban
Kona Go and Active variants feature the City/Urban version of the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system, which utilises a windshield mounted camera to detect other vehicles in front. If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the Supervision cluster. FCW is active above speeds of 8km/h, and up to speeds of 80 km/h.
Additionally, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – City/Urban works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning). FCA – City/Urban is active above speeds of approximately 8 km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 75 km/h.
The FCA City/Urban/Interurban/Pedestrian system featured in 2020 Kona Elite and Highlander variants incorporates a radar sensor in addition to the windscreen-mounted camera, and has additional functionality, which is summarised in the table below.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System consists of two modes – Lane Departure Warning (LDW) mode, and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) mode.
At speeds of 60 km/h or above, LDW uses the windshield mounted camera to detect lane markings and monitor the vehicle’s position in the lane. Should the vehicle stray from the intended lane without indicators being activated, an audible and visual warning will be sounded.
LKA can be activated at speeds of 60km/h or above where lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are detected. LKA helps prevent the vehicle from straying from the lane by providing steering intervention should the driver not react to warnings from the LDW system.
Both LKA and LDW are momentarily deactivated whenever turn signals are active. Additionally, the driver must maintain control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel.
Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
At speeds above 60km/h and below 180km/h, Driver Attention Warning (DAW) uses the windshield-mounted camera to continually monitor the vehicle’s position within the lane, whilst also tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, as well as time since last break.
Should the system detect careless driving (such as sudden steering/braking inputs and/or inability to keep within lane), the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease. Should the level decrease to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver take a break.
Smart Cruise Control (SCC)
In 2020 Kona Elite and Highlander, Smart Cruise Control utilises the front radar sensor to detect the speed and distance of vehicles ahead. The system automatically maintains a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, up to a pre-set speed by the driver (between 30km/h – 180km/h).
Should the vehicle ahead come to a stop, SCC will slow the vehicle down to 10 km/h before prompting the driver to take over to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
HYUNDAI AUTO LINK
Hyundai Auto Link is a smartphone app that allows the customer to stay connected to their car. It works by using a pre-installed module that connects the car’s computer to the customer’s mobile phone. There are two versions of Auto Link available, depending on the model and variant in the Hyundai vehicle range:
Auto Link (Bluetooth®) module: Standard on Kona Go, Active and Elite variants
Auto Link Premium (SIM) module: Standard on Kona Highlander variants
