To work in fleet management and leasing, no. To efficiently and effectively run a fleet, it’s probably a good idea. And if you want to have a career in asset management, I would recommend it.
In 1996 I wanted a career change while staying in the automotive industry. I was a qualified motor mechanic and spent some time in spare parts sales. I was looking for something different and was given the opportunity to become a Fleet Maintenance Controller at Ampol Starfleet. Until I started the role, I didn’t know anything about fleet management.
Since then I have been to university and completed numerous other short courses to improve my competency and understanding in the key aspects of fleet management and leasing.
Now in 2022, I’ll get my first formal qualification in fleet management by completing the IPWEA Fleet Management Certificate which starts on 2nd August 2022.
The IPWEA Fleet Management Certificate is an industry recognised qualification designed specifically for those working or wanting to work in Fleet Management. It provides the opportunity to learn, practice and apply the critical principles, knowledge and skills required to effectively and efficiently manage a plant and vehicle fleet.
Each year IPWEA Fleet offers two semesters and participants complete the course via online tutorials and assignments over 12 weeks.
Based on IPWEA’s best practice manual the Plant and Vehicle Management Manual Edition 4, the Fleet Management Certificate features six inter-related units – each dealing with an important aspect of fleet management.
The six modules in the course are:
- Fleet utilisation
- Financial Management
- Procurement
- Maintenance management
- Service level agreements
- Regulatory requirements
