A smooth and economical all-new Smartstream 2.0-litre MPi petrol engine with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.
In addition, Tucson Elite and Highlander offer an all-new Smartstream 1.6-litre Turbo GDi Turbo petrol engine teamed with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
An all-new Smartstream 2.0-litre Turbo CRDi engine is paired with a Hyundai-developed eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD.
Tucson’s advanced HTRAC AWD is developed as a multi-mode system, and provides an electronic, variable torque-split clutch with active torque control between the front and rear axles.
By tracking vehicle speed and road conditions, the system can optimally apportion torque between the front and rear axles as well as control braking between left and right wheels.
All-new Tucson’s driver-selectable Normal, Eco, Sport and Smart drive modes apply specific HTRAC torque distribution settings, to provide confident control in all conditions.
For example, the Sport setting delivers an agile feel by sending a greater proportion of the available torque to the rear wheels.
The system has a wide range of torque distribution variability, and is designed to be advantageous in various conditions, including straight-line acceleration, medium/high-speed cornering, and during hill-starts. Additionally, the HTRAC AWD system brings a Terrain Mode specific to diesel variants, to enable safer driving on challenging unsealed roads.
CHASSIS AND TUNING
2022 Tuscon adopts the global tune, honed at our Namyang R&D centre, and developed to deliver the Hyundai-signature ‘comfortable, yet surprisingly capable’ flavour.
While local tuning was not carried out on this model, the chassis was put through the gruelling testing and scoring system developed by HMCA for evaluation and sign-off, which incorporates the full spectrum of challenging Australian city, highway, country and gravel roads.
“Tuscon passed with flying colours,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Product Planning and Development Specialist Tim Rodgers said. “We’re super happy with it.”
SMARTSENSE SAFETY
All-new Tucson features an extensive standard suite of SmartSense™ driver assistance and advanced active safety technologies including many segment-first, new-to-the-model and newly enhanced features.
In addition, 2022 Tucson features a Hyundai-first seven airbag system as standard, including front, side, curtain and front centre side airbags.
Hyundai’s advanced front centre side airbag is mounted in the left of the driver’s seat backrest, and prevents or reduces injuries caused by collisions between the front passengers or with interior components, in the event of a side impact.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) – segment first
BCA detects vehicles in Tucson’s blind spot and provides a visual alert in the exterior mirrors. If the driver proceeds to activate the corresponding indicator lights, a flashing visual warning is provided and an alert is sounded.
The system also scans for vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear, and uses the same warning measures to alert the driver of vehicles approaching at high speed which may soon enter Tucson’s blind spot. The system is operational at speeds of 20km/h and above.
In addition, at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h BCA can initiate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to help avoid a collision with an approaching vehicle, next to or behind Tucson, which it deems as being at a high risk of contact due to its proximity.
As an avoidance manoeuvre the system gently applies braking to the wheels on the opposing side of the potential collision point, to steer the vehicle away from a potential collision and avoid or mitigate against damage.
Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM) – segment first
A Blind-Spot View Monitor in Tucson provides a video image of the left and right blind-spot zones on the 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster display when the corresponding turn signal is in operation, to support safe lane-change manoeuvres by increasing the field of vision compared with using the side mirrors alone.
Remote Smart Parking Assist System (RSPAS) – segment first
Hyundai’s Remote Smart Parking Assist System (RSPAS) allows Tucson to be manoeuvered in and out of tight perpendicular parking spots using controls on the Smart Key. When parked, Tucson can be turned off and locked without the need to enter the vehicle.
RSPAS utilises Tucson’s various ultrasonic sensors and will automatically stop the vehicle if it detects an object in its path during a maneuver.
Safe Exit Assist (SEA)
The Safe Exit Assist (SEA) system in Tucson reduces the risk of occupants exiting the vehicle when the surroundings make it unsafe to do so. The system works in conjunction with the radar sensors on either side of the rear bumper to detect vehicles approaching from the rear. When the vehicle is stopped and SEA is active, the system scans Tucson’s rear path.
If a door is opened while an approaching vehicle is detected, the system will issue an audible alert and display a warning in the instrument cluster, advising that the exiting occupant should ‘watch for traffic’.
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA- Car/Pedestrian/Cyclist)
The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system, when active, utilises the front radar sensor and windscreen-mounted camera to detect and monitor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in front of Tucson.
If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the cluster. FCW is active between speeds of 10 and 180km/h.
Additionally, FCA works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning).
FCA is active above speeds of approximately 10km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 60km/h.

Forward Collision Avoidance Assist-Junction Turning (FCA-JT)
A Junction Turning (FCA-JT) function detects oncoming traffic when turning right (with the right indicator activated) at an intersection. If a collision appears likely, the brakes are applied to reduce the chance of a collision.
When the vehicle turns to the right at a junction, the front view camera and the front radar recognises any oncoming vehicle in advance and displays warning messages or alarms in accordance with the collision risk levels.

Driver Attention Warning (DAW) with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert
Driver Attention Warning (DAW) continually monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane using the windscreen-mounted camera, while tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, and elapsed time since last break.
Should the system detect careless driving – such as sudden steering/braking inputs and/or inability to keep within a lane – the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease.
Should the level decrease to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver takes a break. The system is in operation at speeds up to 180km/h.
The system also features Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, which monitors the vehicle ahead when Tucson is stopped in traffic. If the vehicle ahead drives off, and the Tucson driver fails to accelerate away, the system will sound a chime to alert the potentially inattentive driver.
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go and one-touch ‘on’
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go detects the speed and distance of vehicles ahead of Tucson. SCC maintains a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, up to a pre-set speed in the operational range of 10 to 180km/h.
The Stop & Go function works in stop/start traffic, bringing the vehicle to a stop when appropriate, and then automatically accelerating it back to the original set speed.
If the vehicle is stationary for more than three seconds, SCC will prompt the driver to continue cruise conditions using the steering wheel switches.
Lane Following Assist (LFA)
Lane Following Assist (LFA) detects lane markings on the road using the front windscreen-mounted camera, and provides steering assistance to ensure Tucson stays in the centre of the lane. LFA is active whenever Smart Cruise Control is operating, lane markers are detected, and vehicle speed is less than 150km/h.
When the system is activated, the indicator on the cluster will illuminate. The indicator colour will change depending on the condition of LFA system – green indicates that the system is enabled, and white indicates that the system is ready.

Surround View Monitor (SVM)
New Tucson utilises multiple cameras to give the driver bird’s eye view of the surroundings, to aid confidence when maneuvering into or out of spaces.
Also the Rear View Monitor (RVM) system on Tucson allows the rear camera to remain on constantly whilst driving if required, to help the driver continually monitor the road conditions behind the vehicle. The Parking Guidance function displays guide lines that swivel automatically as the steering wheel is turned.
Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist – Rear (PCA-R)
The Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist system in Tucson warns the driver of obstacles when reversing. If the vehicle is in danger of a collision, a warning will sound and the vehicle can engage emergency braking to prevent a collision. PCA-R is operational at reversing speeds below 10km/h.
Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA)
Intelligent Speed Limit Assist utilises the windscreen-mounted camera and the navigation system to provide speed limit information to the driver.
In addition, the system will prompt the driver to change the set speed for the Manual Speed Limit Assist or Smart Cruise Control to ensure the vehicle does not inadvertently exceed the speed limit.
If the speed limit of the road changes during Manual Speed Limit Assist or Smart Cruise Control operation, an up or down arrow is displayed to indicate that the set speed may need to be changed.
Multi-Collision Brake (MCB)
The Multi-Collision Brake system operates to prevent or reduce the severity of a secondary collision. The system is activated after the airbags have deployed and, where brake or accelerator pedal input is not detected, applies the brakes to bring Tucson to a stop.
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) monitors for traffic approaching on either side of Tucson when reversing out of perpendicular parking spaces, at speeds of 8 km/h and below, using the vehicle’s radar sensors.
Should RCCA detect a vehicle approaching, the system will sound a chime and display a warning on the cluster and multimedia screens, and in the corresponding exterior mirror.
In the event the driver does not respond to a warning, the system may activate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to apply braking force and help avoid a collision with the approaching vehicle. The system can detect approaching vehicles travelling at speeds between 8 and 36km/h.
Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)
The Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) system aims to prevent the unintentional leaving or locking-in of children or pets in Tucson. When active, the system registers the entry of rear occupants via the rear doors opening and closing and utilises an ultrasonic sensor in the headlining to detect movement in the cabin.
Upon opening the driver’s door after parking, ROA issues a warning chime and prompts the driver via the cluster to ‘check rear seats’.
If the user proceeds to close the door and lock the vehicle, the ROA system then becomes operational for an eight-hour period. During this time if movement is detected inside the cabin the system will activate the horn for a period of 25 seconds to alert the driver and others to the situation.
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) consists of two switchable functions – Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Active LKA.
LDW uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect lane markings and monitor the vehicle’s position in the lane, and operates at speeds of 60km/h and above. Should the vehicle stray from the intended lane without indicators being activated, audible and visual warnings will be issued.
The Active LKA function helps prevent the vehicle from straying from the lane and provides steering intervention as the vehicle is about to leave the lane. Where required, LKA provides earlier steering intervention in order to assist the vehicle in staying in the centre of the lane.
LKA can be activated at speeds of 60km/h and above where lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are detected. Both LDW and Active LKA are momentarily deactivated whenever turn signals are active. Additionally, the driver must maintain control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel.
High Beam Assist (HBA)
High Beam Assist (HBA) scans the road ahead of Tucson using the windscreen-mounted camera, monitoring for street lights, as well as headlights and taillights of vehicles in front. Upon detection, the system automatically adjusts headlight range, switching between high and low beam.
HBA is active at speeds of 35km/h and above, and is operational when the headlight switch on the indicator lever is placed in the Auto position and the lever is pushed forward.
COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE TECHNOLOGY
Shift-by-Wire Transmission (AWD variants only)
All-new Tucson features easy-to-use electronic gear selection buttons. By adopting shift-by-wire technology, the conventional gear selector is eliminated, freeing space for additional storage.
10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster display
A 10.25-inch colour LCD supervision instrument cluster display presents a digital speedometer, a range of trip computer information, and visual alerts and system status updates from SmartSense™ and other safety systems.
10.25-inch Satellite Navigation System with Bose Premium Audio
A 10.25-inch touchscreen integrated into the top of Tucson’s dash provides easy line-of-sight viewing of navigation, audio, and other information. The unit gives users the option of a wide panoramic map view, or a split-screen display of both navigation and audio information.
Smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ allows connected users to perform the activities usually carried out on the handset in a safer manner via the in-dash multimedia touchscreen.
Wireless Smartphone Charging
Standard in every 2022 Tucson, the wireless charging pad allows the easy charging of compatible Qi-standard devices, improving convenience for front occupants.
Personalised Profiles
The user’s preferred cluster, display, media and driving settings can now be stored in separate profiles and summoned as required. A further guest profile caters for the one-off user.
Dual-zone Climate-Control Air Conditioning
A climate-control air conditioning system ensures maximum comfort and convenience for all occupants by automatically maintaining the set temperatures.
Two sets of fully automatic controls enable the driver and front passenger to set individual temperature zones for enhanced comfort. There are separate centre air-conditioning outlets for rear occupants.
Additionally, if the HVAC system detects a large difference between the climate control settings and the cabin temperature, the heated and ventilated seats and heated steering wheel will be activated to assist in bridging the temperature difference while the interior is brought to the desired temperature.
Multi-Air Diffusion Mode
A class-first in all-new Tucson, the advanced Multi-Air Diffusion Mode blows soft streams of cold or warm air from multiple extra vents around the cabin. Additionally, if the Multi-Air Mode button is pressed when the air volume level is beyond four, it automatically decreases to three.
Quiet Mode
Quiet mode mutes the speakers in the rear of the cabin and sets the front speakers to seven or below, so that second-row occupants can chat or sleep while front occupants continue to use the audio system.
Smart Power Tailgate
Tucson’s Smart Power Tailgate provides convenient hands-free powered operation. The tailgate can be opened using the switch, the Smart Key button, or by the user being in proximity.
When the user enters the detection zone (50-100cm aft of the tailgate) with the Smart Key, an alert is sounded and the hazard lights flash. Should the user remain within this area for three seconds, the tailgate will open automatically.
Tailgate speed and lift height are easily adjusted. The latter is selectable from three heights, to allow for easy reach, as well as preventing contact with a low ceiling.
Electrically adjusted driver’s and passenger’s seat
Tucson Highlander features an electrically adjustable driver’s seat offering a total of 10 adjustment settings – including two-way lumbar support – to ensure that a comfortable position can always be achieved. Front passengers can also get comfortable easily in an eight-way electrically adjustable seat.
Heated and ventilated front seats – heated second-row seats
For the first time in Tucson, both first and second row passengers in the Highlander variants gain the extra comfort of heated seats. The 3 stage heating elements ensure seating surfaces are warmed in cool weather.
During hotter conditions, 3 stage ventilation fans blow a gentle stream of cooling air through the perforations in the front leather seats. Also, heated front seats are now available in the Elite grade as standard.
Power sunroof
Tucson’s large, dual-panel panoramic glass sunroof features a power tilt and slide front panel, offering a touch of luxury. A motorised sunblind can be closed completely to offer shade for occupants when desired.
